Johnny K, I'm talking about the econ programs in the respective schools...not comparing wharton and UChi's econ program...apples and oranges. Maybe I am nuts, but honestly, Wharton's overrated, and UChicago's underrated. I dumped UChicago only because I got into Huntsman...I wouldn't have came here for Wharton...maybe that sounds like arrogance/nuts to you, but it was a real decision for me...

Okay on that point Ringmaster....

I've heard from friends at Wharton that you pretty much have to sleep with one eye open to make sure no one stabs you in your sleep. It's uber-competitive.

thats complete garbage truazn and your friends have no idea what they are talking about. also, saying wharton is overrated is probably the most stupid thing ive heard all week. if you want to get a job on wall st. after school go to wharton. if you want to be an academic, get a PhD etc go to Chicago. Of course Chicago econ is better than Penn econ but we are comparing apples to oranges. Personally econ doesnt appeal at all to me so im studying finance and statistics. It depends on what YOU want to do. So OP state what you like, what are your goals and then we can give you a better assessment

How far behind Chicago is Penn at Econ? I'm considering majoring in econ and already turned down Chicago in favor of Penn. I know Chicago is #1, but isn't Penn still a top 10ish program?

so many stereotypes on this thread... it's making me cringe.

Do a Google search on "economics department rankings" and you'll see that Penn does very well.

chicago is amazing. i have friend who is currently there for economics and he loves it.

Academically, there's no disadvantage to Penn econ compared to Chicago. Chicago's econ rotates among the top 3 and Penn does the same in the top 6-8 so both are great programs that will get you into a PhD program. Chicago produces more scholars than Penn, which is more industry oriented, but you can use that as a standout advantage at Penn.
