UPitt vs. UMich vs. UNC Chapel Hill--HELP!!

So my D has been accepted to all three universities and is ready to make a decision in a month or so. She has been offered a full tuition honors scholarship from UPitt, but still haven't heard from the financial aid office in terms of our EFC (but as of now, around 15K). For UMich, our EFC will be 15K. And for UNC Chapel Hill, our EFC will be a little over 10K. The only thing that worries me about UMich and UNC Chapel Hill is if their financial aid is for every year throughout her undergraduate years if the financial need/situation stays the same throughout the entire time. If the financial aid package stays consistent for all four years, then that would be a big relief so we wouldn't have to worry for each year how much we would be offered!

She wants to major in biochemistry, neuroscience, etc. and plans to attend medical school after her undergraduate years.

Which school would you think provides the best quality education for the best price? In terms of getting a high GPA, where would it be the most convenient? The quality of the school is also very important for us because we want to make sure she will be happy there.

Right now, she's leaning towards the University of Pittsburgh because of the full-tuition scholarship (the fact that it will look good on resumes and grad school applications, etc.) and the close proximity to UPMC which gives SO many opportunities to undergrads in terms of volunteering, research, doctor shadowing, etc.).

But, I would love to get more opinions regarding this!!! Please feel to comment/provide feedback! Thank you!

Your daughter is in a very happy position since all 3 of these schools are excellent; she really can’t go wrong. Given that, I’d go with Chapel Hill (assuming you are in-state) but I would suggest calling their financial aid office to have them enlighten you concerning your costs for future years. It’s always smart to minimize your undergraduate costs when considering medical school and UNC-CH has a great reputation across the board.

I’ve known a lot of people who went to Carolina over the years and have yet to hear of anyone who didn’t love it (including the sons of a dear friend, who are currently attending). Congratulations to your daughter; she’s done very well!

Pittsburgh would be an excellent choice, since it is tuition free. It is also a fine school for pre med.

Are you in-state for any of these schools?

No we’re from Oregon but used to live in North Carolina five years back. So OOS for all. And we’re waiting for a couple schools in the west coast, so we’ll see what happens. Thanks guys!! That’s all! Appreciate it!!

Congratulations! What fun and happy choices to make. Hard to say. I have a kid who loves being in a city and love PItt, one who would not hesitate a second to pic UNC, and I,…well, I just love Ann Arbor. So it all comes down to your student who will be calling that place home. I would check and see how difficult or easy it is to get the classes she will be wanting, and how available research opportunities would be for her.

If your family is on a tight budget, cost should figure heavily in this because the doctors I’ve been seeing lately are not happy about their economic prospects and loan situations. With so many changes in the insurance, managed care, medical situation, making the money one used to make as an MD is becoming more difficult. And these doctors all come from families that are not hurting so they have gotten a lot of support. My friend, whose son is a MD was not happy about him doing a fellowship with all of the loans he had and prospects dwindling for payback. So if money is an issue, and she will have to borrow a lot, it would be smart to keep the UG loans down as low as possible, zero, even. ALso the same with family resources. Especially with the magnificent choices she has.
