Upperclassmen Housing

I’m a freshman at Bucknell this year, and people have started talking about their housing plans for next year. I’ve realized that I don’t really understand how the lottery system works. Also, how hard/easy is it to get a mod, or to get into Roberts, or Vedder, etc.? And, what exactly is a “split double?” I heard they exist in Roberts, but I’m not really sure what it is.

Thanks to anyone who can help!

My D is a soph this year. The housing lottery process seemed to go on FOREVER last year…I can’t really speak to how it worked - but I know that she and her now-roommate didn’t have great lottery numbers and ended up in Roberts for this year. If I remember correctly they were not able to get a mod (which they are VERY thankful for now!) They are actually moving at the end of the semester (on Friday!) to a split double also in Roberts. The door from the hallway leads into a bedroom (which is on the small side). Once in that room, you can go into a small bathroom (just a toilet and sink) - and the bathroom has another door leading into a second bedroom (also small). Both bedrooms have windows but only one has a door leading into the hallway.

As a student, I think you have access to look at the floorplans of all the dorms, you can probably see it there.

Hope that helps!

Thanks so much! Do any students know how I can access the floorplans?

They used to have some of them but I can’t find them on the website. I’m not sure about there being a bathroom in most of the split doubles; I’ve never been in one but I have friends who’ve lived in them and none of them ever mentioned a bathroom–I’d guess that that might be a rare thing in just a few of them.

The split doubles typically have one huge bedroom and one small one with only one door; different roommates work this out differently (one of my friends had her and her roommate sleep in the big one and the little one was their closet).

The mods are very divisive–people either love them or hate them. I hate them so I didn’t live there, but a bunch of my best friends did and they really liked it. If you can handle the distance and the squish (although it’ll be better for you since now the mods only have 4 people per side instead of 5 like they did for my year) then you’ll probably enjoy it.

I really don’t know what goes first; I’m a junior but I’ve never been in the housing lottery because of res colleges and sorority housing. But from what I understand, everyone gets a lottery number and a certain number of rooms are block bookable, so if you have number 1 you could get a few rooms on one hall for you and your friends.

I would recommend looking at the buildings before you go to the housing lottery; if you have upperclass friends you know live somewhere you’re interested in, or friends of friends (we had my hallmate’s friends show us their mod), you can ask them if you can check out their rooms, or honestly people at Bucknell are pretty friendly and if you wander around and maybe knock on a door or two people will probably let you look around if you explain you’re trying to figure out what you want to do next year.

Just came back from helping D move into her split double in Roberts. 2 separate bedrooms, one bigger, one smaller, separated by a little hallway where there is a small closet and bathroom (just sink and toilet). Looks very nice!

hey! i’m a freshman at bucknell too, and you can access everything you need to know about housing for next year via mybucknell. once you’re logged in, click on housing and residential life, it’s different than the housing and residential life link on the main bucknell website. although it doesn’t have the floor plans for the dorms online quite yet, it does explain about block booking and other important things. hope this helps!!!
