i used common app and they gave me a merit scholarship, so they must not discriminate against it.

the common app website says they'll 'be back' on July 1st, so that's probably when the app will be ready.

good luck

Ok, Shop Girl was trying to compare the additional Vandy supplement to the Common Application. Shop Girl, if you use Common Application to apply to VAndy, which I strongly recommend, you must also turn in the additional vandy supplement. I know many people at my school who used the Common App but did not turn in a supplement and idd not get accepted (different schools though).

Also, be sure not to concentrate too heavily on getting accepted into Vanderbilt that you neglect choosing a safety school along with other schools.

I know, Vanderbilt is my top choice for sure, but I am having second thoughts about my chances. I don't know if I need to apply binding to Vanderbilt or Wake Forest. I will decide once my SAT scores come back, and hopefully if I break 2100, I'll be able to apply binding to Vandy. I haven't neglected safety schools, so far my safety is College of Charleston, my matches are Rhodes, Wake Forest, Villanova, and my reaches are Vandy, BC, University of Chicago, and Notre Dame (the latter two being really reach schools).

P.S. ecnerwalc3321, I've seen you all over this website. How do you have time for all this?

Well, most people are out of school right now...which can mean a lot of free time for people. I know that my school (University of Michigan) has been out for six weeks now.

well, I am out of school, high school that is. I keep my computer on all day so all I have to do is to log on once in a while.

At most universities Asians are considered an overrepresented minority and therefore are treated at the same level as the majority if not at a lower level which can sometimes be the case. Vanderbilt has been trying to increase diversity over the past few years though so at this school in particular Asians have been having an advantage in applications. I know of people with inferior stats get accepted while people with much better apps get wait-listed.

What do you think of the chances of Asians applying Early Decision and into the Peabody School? I have reasonable stats (weighted average of a 4.6-4.7, 96 to 97 unweighted, my GPA was brought down my junior year unfortunately by taking too many APs, anyways I'll have a total of 8 after senior year. I just wanted some other opinions on chances. Oh and New Sat hit 1950 first, hopefully that will go up when I get my scores back in a couple of weeks). Anyways, these are simply numbers, no EC's included, although mine are average, but anyways I'm interested in other people's opinions.
Thanks for everyone's help.

It seems as though your biggest concern is your SAT score. Have you tried the ACT? Vandy is just as happy to accept that as the SAT. My daughter was admitted ED to class of 09 and the ACT provided her with the best score for admissions. You can convert the ACT to an old SAT score using Collegeboard's web site. Also, the ACT is score choice, so you only send the score you want them to see, thereby giving you several opportunities to achieve your goal.
Overall, I'd say your chances are good for whichever college you pick if you go ED. You can check the student newspaper for admissions articles, but you will find that the ED admit % is much more generous than the regular decision route. Good luck!

can you guys help me out?

Im applying to Emory, Vandy, Duke, and some crap safeties like UGA :).

gpa: 3.4 (retaking class over summer gpa soon to be 3.6)

6 AP's and 3-4 Honors

SAT: 1810 (also retaking after pr class)
SAT II: US history 750

EC's: 2nd degree black belt in tae kwon do (9 years)
track (11th, soon 12th)

Will get rec including how i did all of APUSH 1st semester over winter break to get into the class. Essat will be on honor and how I gave up my friends to the police when they committed arson on a car and how hard it was to give them up but to do the right thing.

I know I'm reviving an old thread, but...

Vanderbilt is NOT recruiting Asians. At my school, a hispanic (1250/1600 SAT, 3.8 GPA) and an African-American (1240/1600 SAT, 3.3 GPA) got in with full scholarships. #2 in our class, an Asian girl (2400 SAT, 4.3 GPA) got in with a 10K scholarship. She also got into MIT, Princeton, and Duke. She opted for MIT.

She had a 1240 and a 3.3 and got a full scholarship? I had a 1450 and a 4.0 and got nothing but need-based...geez.

It was a diversity-based scholarship...in her defense, she was president of the Optimist Club and I go to a feeder school for Vanderbilt (22 out of the 70 in my class applied).

takingbacksaturday...

"crap safeties like UGA" - I resent anyone calling a safety "crap." If it's such crap, then don't apply to it. Because if you don't get in any other schools, you're going there.

I made sure that I would be entirely content if I went to my safety school. And it actually came down to Vandy vs. my safety in the end. You dont pick a safety just to pick one. you pick a safety as another school you would be happy at.

As for your stats, they are all sub-par for admission to vanderbilt. Your GPA is unsatisfactory, as are your test scores. And your essay topic is a bad idea. It can be seen as honorable, but it can also be seen as a guy who ratted out his friends, which is also dishonorable to an extent. (anyone seen codebreakers on ESPN?).

Conclusion: you will be going to a "crap" school.

SAT I: 1530
SAT: 800 English; 800 Chinese; 790 Mathematics II; 790 Biology; 760 Spanish; 760 Physics
AP's: Calc. AB/BC 5 on both and 5 on AB subscore; Computer Science - 4; Chemistry - 5; 3, European History; Spanish - 4
4.0 GPA
National Merit Scholar

EC: Tangsoodo (currently a "retired" black belt), local Youth Symphony and lots of music related things (e.g. inner city music programs), teaching English to Mexicans, translating Buddhist texts, co-captain of Junior and Engineering and Technical Society team (1st in W.Va.), cross country, soccer, tennis.

I think that's about it. This was all a long time ago...

shopgirl--

i don't want to necessarily burst the bubble on your idea but i'm sure that Peabody and Vandy are both wise to gaming the system. it isn't going to be the stats that seal the deal but what you'll bring to the Vandy community.

if you want to teach that's a different story but your ecs and essays and recs will give the game plan away if it's not sincere.

good luck

i agree with music toad. i definately didnt have the best stats, i actually only had a 1360 on my SAT but I was very dedicated to my ECs and the essays I wrote were the best I had written in my life. You really have to express how much you want to (in your case) teach and how you can make a difference. If you are passionate, it will shine through in your application.
