I love being the bearer of not-so-good news!

I have some more accurate data than the data I posted in my previous thread.

"As of mailing day, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions had received 16,875 applications, up 30.7 percent from the 12,911 applications they received last year.

In a year of historically low admissions rates Vanderbilt's acceptance rate also dropped — from 35.7 percent last year to 23 percent this year.

Of the admitted students, the average class rank was in the top 3.7 percent of their class; 92 percent of the students admitted were ranked in the top 90 percent. The middle 50 percent of SAT scores for the admitted students was 1380 to 1540 and the middle 50 percent for the ACT was 31 to 34. "

You know it can only get harder from last year.

holy bjeezus

What is the source of this information?

An un-Common class: Vanderbilt acceptance rate reaches 23 percent with nearly 31 percent increase in applications | InsideVandy

the lower stats that you guys probably recognize are the 1330-1500 sat range etc, which was for the ENROLLED students. The stats posted above are for the admitted students.

Thank you for posting the link. An even more interesting statistic will be the middle 50% range of matriculated students which should be substantially lower than the admit mid-50% range of 1380-1540 since many admitted to Vanderbilt will also be accepted to one or more of the Ivies, Duke, Stanford, Northwestern &/or Chicago.
The last stats reported to & published by USNews' America's Best Colleges was the enrolled students' mid-50% range of 1300-1480 for the class of 2011 which started at Vanderbilt in Fall, 2007. As a point of reference only about 35 of the 1400+ schools reporting to USNews for that year had SAT I scores of 1300/1600 or above for the 25th percentile of the enrolled class.

yup, I think vandy Is a very common safety for ivy bound students.
(.23)(16875)=3881.25 admitted
only 1569 enrolled

Vanderbilt University should move up in the Top 35 Colleges & Universities as ranked by the 25th percentile of matriculated students. Currently the 35 schools with 25th SAT I percentile scores of 1300 or above for the class entering in the Fall, 2007 are:

I'm just personally upset because of my misreading of that months ago.

I went to the 6 week Vanderbilt PAVE program this summer. I told everyone I talked to there I was applying to Vandy ED. But then I realized that I'm poor (~50k combined household income) and financial aid was obviously a factor, and I figured with the score ranges being 1330-1500 & 30-33 [the ENROLLED data] that my 1410/32 would be fine and that I wouldn't have to worry too much for RD.

So basically, after seeing my PAVE friends get in with the same stats [or slightly lower stats] than me, I should have applied ED... and now I'm hopeless.

These are my stats. I figured I'd post them here instead of make them my own thread. So now I can visibly look at them and look at the ridiculous statistics above and either try to make myself feel better, or start feeling horrible.

Teacher Recommendations:
-I know my Chem Honors/Organic/Biochem teacher rec was wonderful. We're good friends, as well. My AP Chem teacher rec was probably really good, but since 4 other people from my school are also using her as a rec, it won't be too helpful

Essay:
-My friends love it. Conscience apparently likes it, too. =) It's not weird, but it's not your average essay. It's deeper and rather beautiful, if I should say so myself. If you guys want to read it, I'll PM it to you.

I KNOW I'm very well rounded. I just don't have any sports and my test scores could be a bit better.

...And now I anxiously wait for 3 months.

A 1410/1600 SAT I score is very impressive, as is an ACT composite score of 32. The difficulty for RD applicants is the percent of each incoming class that is taken by ED admits. Also, Vandy is aggressively recruiting URMs with generous merit & financial aid money that increases the targeted applicant pool. What % of last year's class at Vanderbilt was made up of ED admits?

Ok, well, last year the ED admit rate was around 38%. Assuming ~1500 students applied both EDI and EDII... so that's 570. So 570/3881 = 14.6% of the class.

Yes, so that means that the 1380-1540 should be even higher since the lower scores of the ED applicants have to be cancelled out by higher ones.

Oy vey.

Typically, ED SAT I scores are higher than those of RD applicants. Also, although I am not sure, I suspect that ED admits at Vanderbilt comprise 20% or more of the new class each year. May be substantially higher if the ED round awards merit scholarships.

I'll overestimate numbers here and assume 2000 ED applicants apply and 40% of those get admitted [I know ED1 was 45% but EDII is always lower] THIS YEAR. So that's 800 already. They'll probably admit 4000 total this year, so 20% of the admits would be ED.

So, assuming applications go up to 18,000-20,000... that's 3200 spots out of 16-18 thousand applicants [I minused the 2000 ED]. If it's 16000, then that means a 20% acceptance out of the RD pool. If it's 18,000 then it's 17.8% acceptance out of the RD pool.

I'm guessing the SAT range this year is around 1420-1560, and ACT is 32-34.

Vanderbilt seems to be more competitive than some of the Ivy Leagues. It may even be harder to get into than Duke now.

I'm living on a prayer right now. /lame 80s puns

"Typically, ED SAT I scores are higher than those of RD applicants. "

Are you sure? That would make me feel a bit better!

Vanderbilt is not harder to get admitted to than the Ivies or Duke. SAT I scores for Vanderbilt enrolled students will probably be approximately 1330/1600 for the 25th percentile. Don't stress yourself out. To what other schools did you apply?

I seriously need to stay away from cc until April. I'm afraid my hair will turn gray.

FSU [Amazing chemistry program and #3 film school in the nation]
George Washington
Wake Forest [I'm a big nature person so I like the green of the campus, like Vandy's]
Emory [Vandy's arch-rival, I know. Of course I like Vanderbilt a million times more than any other school, but Emory has a good chemistry and history program. And I just like the fact that Christopher McCandless, the main character from Into the Wild, graduated from there in '90]

I'm just stressing myself out because I care so much. For example, Emory is equally as hard to get into Vanderbilt, but I don't want to go there as much so I haven't stressed about Emory at all. I just wish the admissions people would know that I'm just not applying to Vanderbilt just to apply or because I just "like it." Hopefully on my interview on Monday, I can really convey my undying love for Vanderbilt to my interviewer.

PS: Grey hair is a form of wisdom and experience. =]

(Atleast that's what I tell myself since I already have a few strands!)

Hilsa - Calm down! The fact that you think "you don't have any sports and your test scores could be better" is nuts (and I mean that in a nice way). Really. You are fine. No school wants a robot, and remember sports are only ONE form of ECs - yours are much more interesting. My S was admitted ED1 and he has limited sports (no varsity) but lots of great community service and other ECs. His gpa was slighly lower than yours as were his test scores. There is no reason they will reject you but IF they do, your other options are fine. Wake is a wonderful school, beautiful campus and reminds me alot of Vandy (just without the city). Either way, don't stress -- sounds like you really want it and my guess is you are in!

Pshh looks like im not in the range (gpa wise that is, I have a 33 act). Vandy aint gonna happen ughhhh.
