Urban Schools

Hi!
I need help expanding my list. I’ve visited a few schools so far and only like two of them: NYU and GW. The other schools that I visited were American, Catholic, and Fordham but I didn’t feel that any of them were really urban (that is, I liked the way NYU and GW were set up- no campus, middle of city, etc).

A little bit of background: I’m at a competitive private school, with a 3.5 and 2000 on the SAT. (And, I know this seems low for NYU but my college counselor says it is well within reach.)

Northeastern and Boston University. Maybe even Providence College.

What major?

University of Pittsburgh,

Drexel, Temple, UPenn(although it has a fairly congruent campus)

Thanks! I’m thinking Pre Med… And I live really close to Prov College, so probably not (just for the sake of new experiences)…

Ah definitely check about Drexel like invader71 said! It’s in the heart of Philadelphia and it has this wonderful co-op program, in which some students make thousands of dollars! I don’t know how it works for ore-med though. But Drexel has good name recognition and although it isn’t as selective as NYU and GW, you would probably get merit aid which can’t hurt!

Loyola Chicago.

DePaul (probably a safety), Eugene Lang/New School (sort of like Bennington or Hampshire dropped onto lower Fifth Avenue, just a few blocks from NYU), Fordham-Lincoln Center (not just performing arts). Fordham and Lang are not good choices if you are interested in a Science major, however. If you are seeking a more pre-professional major, Pace would work for you. I second Temple and Pitt.

CUNY(Honor College) - Hunter, Baruch , CCNY

You should look at Fordham’s Lincoln Center campus if you want urban - on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Also I’d second BU.

I have the preferences. Hated Fordham, although I think Lincoln center is more urban?

Boston U for sure
DePaul - more of a safety, but I am madly in love with this place
Columbia maybe? I haven’t visited but they seem similar. A reach, probably.
Suffolk - definitely a safety but it’s right in downtown Boston
Pace U - This one I thought was cool because it’s very urban but almost everything’s in one building, so on days when the weather is terrible you still don’t have an excuse to get out of bed.
Long Island University - definitely a safety

Fordham’s Lincoln Center campus is totally urban. I certainly think it is worth a look. (For full disclosure, my S went to Rose Hill and loved it, but he wanted a campus feel with access to a city – he did live at the Lincoln Center campus for a summer so I’ve been there as well). As the name says that campus is right across the street from Lincoln Center in the west 60’s in Manhattan. Fantastic location. The campus is small and urban. They just put up a big new building there. The LC campus has the theater and dance program and has a reputation of having a bit artsier/more liberal/independent minded student body as compared to the RH campus. Many people who like NYU like Fordham LC.

Maybe also look into Barnard as a reach.

Thanks for all the suggestions. And I forgot to mention, I did see Fordham Lincoln Center but didn’t really like it- I think b/c it was only two buildings (or so) I felt a little bit claustrophobic- but that was just the vibe I got, I’m sure many people really like it there.
