Urban University Help

Hi!
I have recently been searching for universities that may seek my future interest. Okay.. let me break this down for you. I really need to find a university particularly in the city. A university that is a good school... not necessarily as prestigious as an Ivy. My dream school is NYU. Unfortunately, I am unsure the price tag and lack of financial aid from NYU fits my budget. New York City definitely is my top city choice. I would like to focus on a major in Journalism/Media. I am, well, kinda completely clueless searching for universities that may interest me. I really need some insight on other "urban" universities like NYU. Thanks!

Fordham (Lincoln Center), New School (if you can get enough aid), and if price is an issue maybe the CUNY schools in NY, Emerson in Boston (again, if you’d qualify for aid). I would suggest that you do some online research and try to get your hands on some college guide books (I like Princeton Review and Fiske but there are many).

Does it have to be in NYC or can it be in any city?

@happy1 Thanks! What are your thoughts on CUNY? & I actually got both the Princeton Review and Fiske books today!

Take a look at Temple in Philly. It is far more affordable than NYU.

@Lilliana330‌ No, it does not.

OP, are you an international student?

Top journalism program + urban area = USC Annenberg

@jkeil911‌ No, I am from Michigan.

@happy1 Scratch that, what are your thoughts on Fordham?

Syracuse leaps out at me, as does UMD-CP and BU. GWU, Lehigh.

GW or BU are probably the schools most like NYU.

My S went to Fordham (Rose HIll) and LOVED it. That is a traditional campus in the Bronx with easy access to Manhattan. For him Rose Hill was the best of both worlds. If you prefer to be in Manhattan there is a smaller campus that is right at Lincoln Center which you should look into as well. It wouldn’t hurt to look at both campuses. I can’t answer questions about campus life at the Lincoln Center campus but the Fordham thread here is pretty active and has LC parents there.

Overall, the school was a perfect fit for my S --he got a great education, found amazing friends, loved being in NYC etc. Feel free to PM me with any specific questions about Rose Hill.

Temple and Pitt are both less expensive than NYU. I don’t know your stats, but DePaul seems like an option, also. If NYU is a match or low-reach for you, then DePaul would be a low-match or safety. BU is similar to NYU. Pace might be a safety. If you have good stats, you could qualify for merit aid there.

Can anyone tell me about Penn State?

great graduate program in school of communications. unaware of undergraduate program. some people find it a nice college town. i think it’s isolated (about two hours from Pitt, 4 hrs Philly), insular, and friendly to strangers who look like me. It is surrounded by some pretty country, farms, forested mountains, lakes, creeks, skiing, hiking, biking, climbing, some of the best flyfishing on the East Coast. Difficult for OOS students to get into, and cost is around 45K. Good honors college.

I’ve visited Fordham at Lincoln Center, and I thought the location was to die for. Literally two or three blocks from Central Park, two or three blocks to Lincoln Center with the NYC Ballet, Opera and Symphony if you are into the arts and also very close to Julliard. The school is small, about 1500 undergrads if I remember correctly, but the thing that struck me was the campus. The whole school is contained inside of three buildings (plus a building for the law school, that probably wouldn’t affect you). The dorm I saw while I was there was a triple with its own bathroom and kitchen, but was very dark and felt a little tight. They are in the process of building a new dorm (for freshman and sophomores if I remember correctly), that I believe is supposed to open for the class of 2019, so that would definitely be a plus.

Academics-wise, they do have pretty hefty distribution requirements (about 1/3 of your classes), which is something to consider. You do have access to all the classes at Rose Hill, and there is a shuttle that runs between the two campuses. I can’t think of anything else to mention, but if you have any questions, feel free to PM me!

Penn State is anything but urban. Were you thinking of University of Pennsylvania?

For a safety, consider Columbia College Chicago.

@woogzmama‌ No, I was referring to Penn State. I was just curious about the school… I know it’s not necessarily “urban”. And Columbia would be dream. However, I really don’t know how well my chances would be yet. Currently, I have a 4.0 uw, lots of extracurriculars, NHS, honors/AP’s, internships/jobs, a passion for writing, etc etc etc but I’m worried about my standardized tests scores. That is definitely a weak point for me. I take my ACT this year so I guess we will see.
