Dad just filed taxes this week. We realize we made a mistake on the CSS, and I understand that I should amend a hard copy of the CSS and mail it to each individual college.

Now, we are mailing IDOC tomorrow, which is our legitimately filed taxes, which would coincidentally include the information we would otherwise be amending through hard CSS copies sent to each school.

Will IDOC be sufficient, or should we also mail out the amended CSS estimates that we submitted last month? This is all very confusing, and the deadline is less than a week away.

PLEASE, if you have experience with this situation, help!

Phone the financial aid office at each school. I did this and found about half wanted us to send them a corrected CSS Profile, and about half said don’t bother, they prefer to pick up the corrections themselves, when reviewing the tax returns.

Of those that wanted a corrected CSS Profile, some seemed to prefer it be sent in by fax and others by mail. I did what they recommended.

Thank you so much weatherga!
I have emailed each of them, and I will phone them on Monday during office hours.

Two of my schools are USC and Brandeis, which don’t require tax returns, so I will definitely need to send them a corrected CSS profile.

We mailed IDOC to COllege Board for the other 4 this morning, but I will still call these schools to see if they want the corrected profile as well.

I would call the school as all policies will be school specific. I made a minor, small dollar amount mistake on CSS Profile and the school accepted the correction in the form of an email. One of D’s other schools quite specifically says not to fax anything because they scan all and fax information is not clear enough to scan.

Hang in there. Know that next year will be massively easier as you will be dealing with only one college department.

You are correct that you want to work hard to meet all deadlines – but know that all the colleges know that parents and students are new to the process and most will work with you if you are upfront, polite and clear (and not too wound up).

As huge as this is looming right now, make copies of everything as all of this will fade and you’ll want to have this year’s forms on hand when you repeat the process next cycle. The memory of all this fades as the year moves on!
