Urgent common app question - Parent info

Urgent question, I notice the parents forum has insightful people, maybe you can advise me:

My mother went to community college but she went for about 1-2 years and never finished and never got a degree.

I am filling out my common app on paper, so it asks "College (if any)" with a line.

Should I fill out "no college", since it might be assuming that she got a degree? Or what?

I'm not sure, but I tend to agree with you to leave it off if she didn't graduate. It won't make much impact, if any, on your college's decision. Honestly, I'm not even sure why they ask this question!

I think they ask this question to determine if the applicant is a first generation college student.

If she attended, mention that she attended. There is a difference between starting and graduating.

The line right below college if any states Degree.

So if you put down that your mom went to Joe & Willie's Community college and if you leave the degree line blank the college will know that she did not graduate.

Remember that you must sign the following statement at the bottom of the common application:

I certify that all information submitted in the admission process—including the application, the Personal Essay, any supplements, and any supporting materials—is my own work, factually true, and honestly presented. I understand that I may be subject to disciplinary action, including admission revocation or expulsion, should the information I’ve certified be false.

The net-net is this:

Your mom attending community college and not graduating is such a minor point in the big scheme of things. Omitting the information does not increase your chances of being admitted. However, it it comes out that you did tell a lie of omission and you did intentionally misrepresent yourself, your admissions could be rescinded. It is not an issue that is worth lying about. Just tell the truth and move on.

Totally agree with sybbie. List the college (and years attended if there is a space for that). Leave the "Degree" box blank, or put a dash or "na" or "none."
