Urgent! Help! About FA

Hi everybody I'm a newly accepted student at UT Austin. The financial aid office needs my bank information to continue viewing my application. Do I have to provide that?? What is that for? Anybody applying for Financial aid too? When can we get our results? Thanks very much!!

If you’re worried about it, email them or ASK DON. Yeah, I know it’s a weird name.
[FINANCIAL AID: Questions? Ask DON! (Data ON-line)](http://finaid.utexas.edu/contact/askdon.html)

I don’t remember, but I think it’s in case you have more funds than Texas debt, they’ll deposit it in your bank account. But don’t take my word for it…

Are you an international student? I have not heard of bank account information being asked for before for non-internationals.

Thank you very much! Will they send the answer to me by email or I have to check on the ASK DON? Well I guess I better check it everyday.I’m really worried about it cuz I need my financial aid information before May 1st to help me determine which school I’ll attend!!

No, I’m not an international student.

I think you’re supposed to ASK DON first, and if it doesn’t answer your question, they give you a form so you can email them.

I’m a US permanent resident actually.

Here is my recollection: They actually seem to want a bank account on file for everyone. It could be a bank account that as of today has a dollar in it; they promise they are not going to take money OUT of that account and don’t imply that they are going to look in it to see how much money you have in it at this moment.

Two reasons they would use it.

 1. so you are set up in case you want to direct deposit your tuition payments. They don’t take credit cards and it seems like they prefer direct deposits. Mailing a paper check seems is always an option, I am sure.
 2. so they can refund you if you overpay, which can happen with deadlines and money coming from other sources. My daughter received an outside Girl Scout Gold Award Scholarship that was sent directly to UT after the tuition deadline so she had already paid her fall tuition. My recollection is that they used the bank account to refund the amount of the scholarship.

(I don’t know that you are required to provide your bank account number, but I wasn’t really paying attention to that aspect of it and I’m sure their rules might be different for international students.)

Thanks a lot! really appreciate it!
