I wish to go to medical school.
Should I apply to mathematics or biology?
*As my ECs and scores show, I love mathematics. But as for my future occupation, I wish to become a doctor. What should I do! Should I write in the essay that I want to study mathematics but want to become a doctor? I want to become a doctor because I'm planning to spend most of my life in Africa to cure people and spread gospel (my family members and relatives are all devout Christians) just like my idol, Dr. Noguchi, did. Please give me an advice! Thank You! (Oh, I'm applying to CAS, which is a hugh reach for me currently b/c of my low SAT score..... but I will raise it up for sure!) THANK YOU!! Oh, and do you think I have any chance if I get over 2200+ in SAT?
Do you think, in your opinion, I will stand a better chance getting in if i choose math major? Thank you!

You are extremely unlikely to get in. Looking at your Reading/Writing scores I would suggest applying to a different school (with strong technical/science majors but without the core). Core will kill you (humanities, etc.).

Examples of schools to consider instead - UIUC, Michigan (if you can get in those).

Honestly, I think the above poster is being a little assuming and I must disagree. I do not go to U of C, I want to.

Consider this, if you don't apply, you definitely don't have a chance, if you do apply, you have a slim one. You'll probably be on the lower end of the applicant pool, but it doesn't mean you don't have a shot. Your test scores aren't terrible, you've definitely gone above and beyond class-wise. Write amazing essays. Try taking the ACT, the math is probably elementary for you and the english/reading is not too difficult with a little practice. Speak to the admissions rep assigned to you, let them know you're interested.

BTW, I highly doubt your intended choice of major is going to make a huge difference in the admissions decision. Plenty of freshmen who start out thinking they know what they want to do end up switching their major by sophomore year. This is typical of most colleges.

Chicago does not require nor expect a major to be stated. Also, plenty of premed students are Humanities concentrators. Test scores will not keep one out if one can write good essays and make a case why one should be at the school.

You will prolly get in, but I must also say you are the most stereotypical Asian ever. Try to avoid that on the essays/apps.

Your SAT isnt that low, try taking it again, Chicago takes your highest score in each subject. Your SAT IIs are next to worthless though, Chicago doesn't pay much mind to them. With your ECs, decently strong test scores, course schedule, and GPA I dont see them rejecting you. But no one can judge how the adcom will feel that day. Perhaps they will have a mess around day and reject all the qualified applicants and let in the underdogs.. we can only speculate. By the by.. about your major, if I get in to Chicago I am going to be premed with a Classical Studies major.. med schools love weird stuff. Good luck!

^ Well I sure hope they don't admit based on how they feel that day.

Notsomuch,
Very cool regarding your interest in Classics. I, too, a very interested in that area (specifically Greek), though math is always an option as well. Unfortunately, I am not innately talented in either subject.

Wait....Notsomuch, that post reads as if you are going to major in Classical studies because med schools love "weird stuff". What the heck??? That type of "weird stuff" is the source of my stereotypes against pre-med students.

Well, if he likes Classics, then go for it. If not, he should know that Classics is no easy major; don't assume that Latin and Greek are analygous to French and Spanish, because they aren't.
