Hello, i need some advice and I'd appreciate it if you can take a little time to help me out. I am a soon-to-be senior in highschool, my grades from 9-10 werre As and Bs. Junior year my house caught on fire the beginning of the year, and i lost everything i ever owned, including a brand new Camaro. this hit me harder than you can imagine. my grades dropped significantly. so as of right now i have a 3.00 GPA and about 1700 SAT score. i know NO UC schools will take me initially, so i planned to make appeals to every UC school, my goal is UCSB at best, and UCR at the least. what are your opinions of my appeal chances? I plan to major in psychology, it only make sense in my situation after all i went through.

can some one with experiences please help me out, i am under an unbelievable amount of stress :/

Woah, calm down. Don’t worry about appeals until you get a rejection letter. You’ll just cause yourself a huge amount of unnecessary stress, which you do not need while you’re filling out applications. If it really comes down to it, and you need to write an appeal, I think you have a pretty good shot, but I also have no idea what criteria admissions counselors use for appeals.

You still have a chance of getting in because college acceptances can be random. My dorm roommate this past year was accepted with a 3.0 and like a 1400 on the SAT. Don’t have your heart set on failure.

-When applying I suggest choosing a different major to apply with. Psychology is really impacted and you could get rejected from it.

@42327119 haha thanks but I think I’ll be fine while filling out my apps. It’s good to hear someone got in with low scores like mine, what school is it?
And I had to see a psychologist after what happened I my house & thats what inspired me to major psychology, I wrote that in my app essay, hopefully UCs can understand why.

He was from some school in San Diego and somehow got into UCR. It was a big mystery to me, but he left during the first quarter. One day he was just gone. Kind of weird lol.

Psychology is a good choice. But when you apply to the UCs, there are second (and maybe third) choices for a major. Make sure you pick second/third choice majors that aren’t so selective/less crowded, you’ll have a better chance at getting in. At UCR, Psychology is impacted so a lot of incoming freshmen aren’t accepted into it and instead get their second/third choices. But, if their college grades are good, then they can eventually declare Psychology as a major. Good luck with your applications! I really hope you get in.

ahahahaha that is kinda weird, but yeah thanks for the advice! ill definitely do that for my apps. maybe ill even see you at UCR in the future!

Appeals have a very very small chance of actually changing whether or not you get accepted or not. Especially if you don’t have any new evidence shedding light on whether or not you should be accepted. It would have to be something like, the school gave you a wrong grade on accident or something.

My suggestion to you is, if you feel really uncertain about getting into a UC, start applying to community colleges in your area. After 2 years at a CC, you can transfer into a UC. You also save a boatload of money while doing it.
