ok heres the problem. i had narrowed down my college choices to cmu and cornell. i am getting decent aid at carnegie but i still havent heard from cornell.

so i called them today and they said ill receive the info about aid next week ie after the 1st. they said i can send the deposit + acceptance after the 12th.

so what do i do? do i wait for cornells fin aid package? what if i wait and then their aid is not enough! im screwed cuz by then the deadline for cmu will have passed.

wow and i thought my financial aid package came late.

you still have a few days left, so dont panic yet, i suppose. which college are you leaning towards, disregarding financial aid? how important is financial aid to you?

i may have a few days, but cornell has told me theres no way ill get it by the 1st. im leaning towards cornell, but at the same time, fin aid is very imp to me.

I am in the EXACT same situation as you are in...... >.< Cornell is starting to **** me off a bit since I got all my stuff in like 1 month ago. They extended my deadline to May 12th as well. However, I guess I am lucky since my other schools don't require me to reply by May 1st.

Sachit you can explicitly talk to CMU. Colleges understand your dilemma. If u just tell them that this finaid package (CMU's) is still a bit uncomfortable to you and you want to hear about all your financial aid packages as it is very very important to you. They might allow you to enroll late..Double deposit is not an option..once you matriculate to one college i think you have to attend it..unless you are taken in from a waitlist some other place...maybe i am wrong but still try talking to CMU..

Also i feel Cornell is fu cki'n around with you...and they have been known for BAD aid packages...so i am having doubts whether their idea is to hide their bad package by giving it out late...so think before you do anything..

I believe that you can use the double deposit option. After getting a good aid package from Cornell, you can respectfully decline your place at CMU.

Good idea to speak to CMU. Double deposit is the way most kids handle this problem. Remember, kids who get off of a waiting list at a later time must pull out of the school to which they sent a deposit. Schools expect this will happen.

I know you said you called Cornell, but is there anyone else in the financial aid office that you can talk to and explain your situtation about CMU. Whoever you have been talking to, ask, respectfully, if there is someone else you can talk to who can expedite the package as you have to give a deposit to another school by May 1. Explain that a late financial aid package may jeopardize your ability to accept Cornell.

wait.. double deposit aint the right option as that way u take a rightful deserving place from another kid..
my suggestion is to talk to CMU and they will SURELY grant u an extension till 12th also ...just tell them u await an aid package from cornell university and wel you must consider both aid awards from both schools before deciding to enrol l. In view of the situation , if explained properly , you will be given an official extension till 12 may as in cornell and you may do what u plz..

On the other side there is another side to it too.. you may at the same time call up cornell also and tell them abt CMU awaiting ur decision to enroll and you need to confirm them but want to compare cornell's aid package also ( tell them these 2 are ur final choices) , this will cause them to pout ur finaid applicationto priotiy listing and thus expedite ur finaid process at Cornell..

So in all i suggest calling both schools againand explaining the situation.. remember after all double deposit is both unethical and undeserving ..you take away someone else's future that may be hanging on the edge for that one decision..

I suspect that schools factor in a bit of double deposting by admitted students.

After all, they have wait lists. So a double deposit for a short time (here about 2 weeks), is ok if the OP has absolutely no other option. No other student would be harmed because schools can't go to their wait lists until after they receive all acceptances.

Send in two deposits to buy yourself some time. It's a small price to pay to save your position and LOTS of people do it for a variety of good reasons. It's OK. Just do it quickly!

I really don't think so. But go ahead and post this question, about sending in a deposit and then deciding to go to another school, on the parent forum to get the word from experienced parents.

I know lots of people who double deposit for a variety of good reasons: need more time as they haven't been able to visit again, waiting for financial info and just plain can't decide where to go! So you lose the money but buy some time. Go ahead; they have waitlists.
