I am taking the ACT this Saturday.

Last time I took the ACT, I did a practice test the night before (bad idea, I know) and got a 36 on the science section. Minus 0. I took the test the next day and got a really low science score (like mid 20's I think).

I took a Barron's science test about a week ago and got like a 32 (but I took it at 1 in the morning). I took a science test today and got a 36.

I'm not sure what to think. I'm getting 36's or high scores on practice tests--in timed conditions--yet received a really low score on the science section on the last ACT (the ACT I took a year ago had even a higher science score, but still not very high).

The tests that I received 36's on were from precious ACT tests... like 2009 and 2011. The one today didn't have a "fighting scientists" passage. Perhaps that caused me trouble?

Anyone have any help?

So yeah the science section hates me. I took the test in Dec of this past year, and like you, I did very well on practice tests on the science section (34+)… But when it came down to the real thing, I got a 30 on science, 36 math, 35’s R + E, for a 34 overall.

My opinion is that the science section is the most unpredictable, and in my experience in taking the ACT five times, I have often found that the degree of difficulty on this section varied wildly… My only advice would be to get ahold of as many practice tests as you can, and hopefully your scores will normalize somewhere (this should also help your confidence)…

Good luck!

It depends very much on the specific topics in the science section. For example, there are some chemistry terminology in the science section that some students have not learned from class yet and found the test very difficult. But for other students that have taken or are taking AP chemistry, it is not so difficult. So you may come across a situation like this.
