URGENT: Is Economics Necessary???

Hello, I am a third year student at a US university in the process of choosing my classes for the semester. I am a Mathematics major who plans to apply for internships next summer at top banks and consulting firms, such as JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Bain and Company, etc. I was wondering how important it is to have at least one economics class in your resume. I don’t really like economics, so I have not taken any economics class in college (only in high school). I have the option to take one this semester, although it would make my schedule a bit complicated. So the bottom line is, how essential is it to have taken an economics class when you apply for summer internships at banks and consulting firms? Will not having an economics course hurt my application? This is urgent as I need to choose my classes within the next few days! Please any comment helps!

As you know IBs like mathmos, so no, it is not necessary, but based on feedback from students that I know who have been interning at the big name IBs & Consultancies, I would recommend it, esp if you can get into a class with a really good prof (matters more than the actual course). With a good one you should find it interesting- way more so than HS Econ!

Or…if the Econ options are really not palatable, a good business course- again, go for the teacher more than the course name- that will introduce some idea of business logic / thinking into your profile.

Thanks for your input. I actually go to a liberal arts college so they don’t have business courses. I think I’ll stick to Intro to Economics for now, hopefully take Game Theory next year (as apparently it is mostly math based and I’m a math major, so shouldn’t be a problem).
