Is it enough to take the classes or do I have to major?

I'm a sociology major with a minor in business applying to grad schools for healthcare management (think normal management/consulting, but with a healthcare focus). A lot of these schools have told me that a background in economics in addition to my current studies would be extremely important to me in what I hope to do.

My question is, would it be enough for me to take a few economics classes or should I major in econ to gain legitimacy in the future? aka, would a major be more valuable to me down the road?

Thanks!

If it is required to get a job. “Background” doesn’t necessarily translate to “education”.
