I am a senior MCB major at Berkeley and will be graduating in Spring 2010. I just found out that the English 1A class that I took at my local community college does not count towards the R1A requirement. I have already done an R5B class at Berkeley. The problem is that now, there are no R1A classes open at all for Spring 2010. Does the college of LS allow you to take another "B" class to satisfy the first half reading requirement? It sucks that I found out so late because now all the easy RC classes have long waitlists...

Start frantically emailing professors.

Start looking into enrolling for R1A equivalent courses at Berkeley City College and getting proper L&S signatures for concurrent enrollment.

So I am guessing this means I cannot take an R1B class to satisfy R1A? I remember hearing somewhere that they would accept it, but I guess ill have to go check at the LS office to make sure.

I’m pretty sure you can’t take a “B”/second-half class to satisfy a “A”/first-half class.

There is an exception process for someone who took the A class but not the B class, where if they are near graduation they can petition to have the second half waived. Presumably, a decent GPA is evidence of adequate competence.

While your situation is not the same, perhaps the same principle might be accepted. Figure out who would speak with for the B waiver process and talk to them about your unqiue case.

If anyone any one is in a similar situation, I spoke with the L&S Office and they said taking another “B” class is acceptable to satisfy the first half of the R&C requirement. I am currently enrolled in Comp Lit R1B but am hoping to get into some other classes. Thanks for your help guys.

Very glad to hear it. Congratulations on your upcoming graduation.
