Urgent: Spring Admit

Hi Everyone
This is my first post but I've been stalking this thread for a while.
As a spring admit, my question is whether or not I can still SIR for another school (UCSD). At USC's reception, I turned in my postcard to hold my spot, but for some reason, my parents got the idea that I should still SIR to UCSD anyway just in case (even though I'm fully committed to USC). Will sending in an SIR to UCSD revoke my offer of admission to USC or have any negative impact? Am I correct in believing that I can SIR to UCSD and then turn down that offer?
Thanks for any help!

Yeah, you can do it. It’s not until you pay the deposits that you’re fully committed.

This should have no effect on USC, but it would make sense only if you actually plan to attend UCSD for the Fall semester. Are you and your parents in agreement about your plan? Are they hoping you change your mind about waiting for USC? If the plan is to earn some credits at UCSD for only one semester, be sure to review what kind of commitment you make to UCSD when you enroll. Sometimes you have to sign a dorm contract for an entire year, for example. My guess is that you won’t be on the hook for the whole year, since it’s a large state U, but always read the fine print! Another factor to consider: if you have no intention of actually attending UCSD in the Fall, there might be another student on the waitlist who would love that spot. Don’t hold it just to hold it.

I don’t think the UCs have waitlist. If you are planning to attend UCSD for Fall semester than I guess you have to send a SIR to UCSD. Call USC to be sure.

I know a 2009 spring admit who attended UCI last fall. She sent in both SIRs last May. It was not a problem. She simply informed UCI that she was withdrawing after the fall semester.
I would imagine it would be the same for UCSD. I also know a couple of other students who were not happy at their respective UCs (one at Davis, the other at Berkeley) who withdrew after their second quarter/first semester without problems.

If you attend UCSD in fall, make sure you take courses that transfer to USC. Do not take courses that apply to your major, but rather take electives or language. Inquire at USC to make sure any courses transfer.

If you do not intend to attend UCSD, don’t SIR. You are definitely accepted to USC. Your parents and you do not need to worry about that.
