URGENT: Transfer to University of Southern California vs. University of Michigan

I just completed two years at a USNWR Top 40 ranked university and have received acceptances to 3 schools with Michigan and Southern California as my top two choices. I currently desire to go to USC. How would both schools look for employers around the country? I know my parents cannot afford USC, but I’m debating about taking loans. Can anyone offer me advice on the two schools? I currently am in Ohio, but have lived in Michigan all my life.

If you cannot afford USC, it is not an option, is it? Or at least, it is not a wise or rational option.

Can your parents afford Michigan?

But why do you wish to transfer out of a good university? Why start all over again? Unless you are unhappy where you are, I would stay put.

Yes, I’m unhappy where I currently am. My school is really not that good academically or socially for me in my opinion. My parents could afford Michigan.

I don’t see how USC is worth the premium over Michigan. Both are great universities, but if only one of them is affordable, the other ceases to make sense. What is your intended major? Do you have graduate school aspirations? Do you have any career plans?

If you can’t afford USC, you shouldn’t be going there.

Agree – if reputation is what you are focused on, I’d say U of M is as strong or even stronger than USC (back in the day USC didn’t have as strong an academic reputation as it does today so older (ahem - my age) folks hiring may not even realize today’s caliber of student who attends. Not worth being saddled with the loans.

Good luck and Go Blue!

Definitely UM. Big fan of usc but um is a fun and exciting place. You will love it.

Both are excellent universities. If cost difference is substantial, I’d go with less expensive option. FIGHT ON and GO BLUE!

You say that you are at a top 40 university that is “really not that good academically”. With a lack of information, I am not convinced that transferring is going to solve the problem, but I suppose that I don’t really know your situation.

That being said, I agree with others. It is not worth taking out loans to attend USC if you can attend U.Michigan without loans. From an academic point of view U.Michigan is a very strong school. At least for what I have worked on for my career (something in high tech), both are good but Michigan is probably stronger and will be looked upon very well by employers.

I only visited Ann Arbor once but I quite liked it.
