USC Vs. Umich Honors....

So I was just admitted at USC through an appeal for fall 2012! however, before i received this decision, I was planning on going to the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. I got into the honors program there. I am so torn apart between the two schools now. I was planning on trying to get into Ross at Michigan. Someone help me! How hard is it to switch to from Dornsife to Marshall? and compare Ross to Marshall please, I know Ross is ranked higher but rankings are really subjective...

I think aside from academics, I would really prefer California over Michigan

I got into UM Ross on preferred admission but I still chose USC! Not only is the weather amazing, but also there are so many opportunities at USC that cannot be found at a public school. Plus if you are oos for UM, a public school, the price is around the same for USC, a private school. The student to faculty ratio is much lower at USC, the trojan family is unbeatable, and there are so many counselors and just people who seem to want to help you succeed. While academics and rankings are important, it really is where you think will fit you better. Michigan is also a great school (my dad’s an alum) so you really can’t make a wrong choice here…

Pigeon,

With your grades and scores my GUESS is it would not be that difficult to transfer into Marshall. You will need to contact your admissions counselor on the best way to deal with this situation. Please understand USC Commencement is on Friday, so some offices may be closed.

Do finances affect your decision? If not, you have appealed and been admitted. Here are a few comparisons between the two universities. I checked both profiles for the latest information. Michigan has not posted their 2012 numbers, so I will only use 2011 data for both.

U.S. News Ranking for Universities
UM 28th
USC 23rd

Student Faculty Ratio
UM 16 to 1
USC 9 to 1

At Michigan you have to be admitted to Ross in the future. It is not a guarantee. Marshall is ranked at 9th in the nation. Although Ross is ranked higher, some programs at Marshall are ranked above Ross:

USC Accounting 4th
UM Accounting 5th

USC Entrepreneurship 3rd Entrepreneur Magazine ranks #1
UM Entrepreneurship 10th

USC International Business 4th
UM International Business 7th

USC Real Estate 5th
UM Real Estate Not in top 10

USC Marketing 10th
UM Marketing 2nd

Admit rate 2011
UM 41%
USC 23% 2012 is 18%

USC has higher SAT scores and ACT scores for entering freshmen. Alumni of USC contribute to the university at a far higher rate than UM.

USC has one of the most diverse student populations in the nation. It has the highest number of international students.

If you are able to arrange the transfer to Marshall there is the Global Leadership Program which is open to high achieving students. This is another topic you might discuss with your academic counselor. It includes a Leadership Colloquium and a study/trip to China.

USC is located in a major center for the entertainment, aerospace, technology, finance and pharmaceuticals industries. This enables Marshall students to have the opportunity for various internships. Marshall’s alumni support is excellent.

USC’s location offers outdoor sports all year. Beaches are about 14 miles away. Access to Catalina Island through SC’s boat is also available. Philharmonic concerts, galleries, opera and entertainment venues can be accessed now using the new Metro system.

In January you will be looking at flowers and green trees instead of snow covered walks and streets.

Ah thank you for the info! I have another question though, do they look at high school GPA when looking at transfer applications? My GPA actually isn’t that great

And I am waiting to hear back from financial aid at USC so that will be a big factor also. I got a lot of money from Michigan so I’m hoping USC can match it or give more
