I applied to UVa this year for entry into Fall 2011 and got in. Last week, I used my mom's credit card to pay the deposit, and I remember the website returning to the SIS portal home page after I entered the credit card details. I thought that since the website returned to the home page, the deposit had been paid.

After this, I also paid the enrollment deposit at Georgia Tech. (I am confused whether I want to pursue a solely engineering course or an engineering program with a good business minor, which is why I applied to UVa.)

Earlier today, my mom got her monthly credit card bill and there was only GA Tech's enrollment deposit!

I was surprised and I thought there might be a mistake, because on the UVa SIS portal I had the option of searching for classes and everything, so I thought I was already enrolled. However, today, when I wanted to activate my UVa email, (its been more than a week since I paid the deposit, so I should be able to activate it by now) there is no option to do so. :/

Basically, the enrollment deposit at Virginia has not been paid! And the worst part is that I was considering UVa over Georgia Tech (because of UVas strength in so many fields, campus, life, and the insurance that I would be able to switch into another major in case engineering isnt my strong point.) Thats why I went to activate the email.

What do I do? The deadline was the 1st of May and now its the 6th! :/ Is there any way the Office of Admissions will allow me to pay the deposit now?! UVa is my top choice (for the reasons i mentioned) and I'll be really upset should I not get a place, after I thought I paid the deposit. I know I should have confirmed if the deposit had been received, but I foolishly didn't and now Im stuck because I dont have a place at my top choice anymore :/

Hi I wanted to deposit at both Georgia Tech and UVa because I needed more time to decide. I am very keen on engineering but am not 100% certain. Georgia Tech has an excellent engineering program, while UVa’s is not especially known for its eng program.

I called admissions though. They said there’s nothing they can do about it. They put me on hold for fourteen minutes, and then told me they cant do anything about it and i should have paid earlier. :/

Is there absolutely nothing I can do? I guess Georgia Tech it is then. How difficult are transfers out of GA Tech?

Seriously?? Uh, get someone of seniority on the phone (a supervisor) and plead your case. You are no way the first acceptee not to have your deposit register. But, only do this if you know that you want UVA, exclusively, now, esp. since I’m wondering if you are having a karma attack since you intended to reserve space at both Georgia Tech and UVA.

I don’t know what you would expect posters on this board to be able to do if the admissions people are telling you no. You need to escalate it with THEM, not ask us.

Is this going to be the new excuse for double depositing?

As Pizzagirl said, escalate it with them if possible and use your guidance counselor but by all means, don’t go to this trouble and embarrass yourself and your school if you are going to then turn them down later.

Good suggestion to go talk to the HS guidance counselor…they need to explain to you why double depositing is a huge problem for you and your HS.

Well, nothing about UVA / Georgia Tech has changed from April 1 (or whenever you found out that you got into both schools). Either you prefer UVA, or you prefer Georgia Tech. One or the other. Aside from financial considerations, I don’t even get all this find-out-on-April-1, decide-on-May-1 stuff. No new information comes in … the schools are the same today as they were a month ago.

common sense says to make sure that you have the receipt after paying, especially online, for something like that. Otherwise you don’t have any proof that the transaction happened, which, in this case, led to your downfall because you assumed it paid.

Online purchases are always accompanied by reciepts in a following webpage.

Life lesson, good luck at GA Tech. Its still a great school, with a fine business dept for a minor.

UVa said they can’t do anything about it. I called them, spoke to the Dean, too, but he said admissions were done and they had a full class, esp after their waitlists and stuff. (yes Foo and Pizzagirl, I did ‘escalate it with them,’ for about a half hour). Tough luck, I guess.

You may abuse me for intending to double deposit. But had I not intended to, I wouldnt have a college to go to. so chill out. YaleGrad, its not an excuse for double depositing (first of all, I didnt even end up double depositing). I was still deciding between the 2 colleges, and my parents couldnt make the final decision just yet. Things had happened between the time of my acceptances and the time to pay deposits (a family member passed away, and I couldnt really talk to my parents about my final decision because my father was out of town). And its my parents paying 200k for my education, so obviously they had the final say. Pizzagirl, thats why I needed more time. I agree the colleges don’t change. There are other factors that could though. Everyone’s situation is not always the same, although it might be in that small world of yours. Keep your criticisms to yourself.

And I was extremely keen on UVa (over GT). siliconvalleymom and yalegrad, I also made my counselor talk to them. Nothing they could do, either.

Hacktacular, I should have got the receipt. I was kind of in a rush, and I entered the details in a couple of mins, and the page went to the UVa SIS portal page, so i thought it went through. God knows. maybe cookies cleared and i got logged out so it didnt go through. I have no fu**ing idea.

So, I’m going to Georgia Tech. It might be for the best. I sure hope so.
