URGENT!! What math to take?

I am premed and an incoming freshman. I am in trinity right now but plan on switching to pratt to major in BME sophmore year. Right now I am thinking on taking EGR 53L, Math 32L, Chem 151L, EGR 10, and Writing 20. Would this be took much work for the first semester? Should I take Math 32 instead? It is not possible to take Chem 151 and EGR 53 without lab, right?

"Too much work" is relative. If you are a quick learner with a consistent work ethic, or have a background in some classes already, you may find that set of classes to only be moderately time consuming. Alternately, if you struggle with focus or take a lot of studying to remember something, you may find that level of classwork untenable. No one can tell you whether or not you have enough arbitrary units of work to make it "too much work".

You cannot take Organic Chemistry or EGR53 without the lab portion. The difference between Math 32L and 32 is relatively minimal, honestly, and if 32L ends up being the straw that breaks the camel's back, you have time at the beginning of the semester to transfer to 32, just the same as with any class - if you find Orgo too challenging, you can drop to 23L or 21L.

I'd suggest not worrying quite so much. If you want a challenge, go for it. You have a relief mechanism in the add/drop period to change things around if it doesn't work out.

Why is the difference between Math 32 and Math 32L relatively minimal?

If I change my mind during the add/drop period, wouldn't it be difficult to get into certain courses?

It's relatively minimal because its more or less the same material, just being presented differently.

<a href="http://www.math.duke.edu/first_year/32_32l.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.math.duke.edu/first_year/32_32l.html</a></p>

"According to the results of the end-of-semester questionnaires, students spend about the same total time outside of class on the two courses."

Yes, you will have more trouble moving around during add/drop, but its not insurmountable.

In the end, you need to make these decisions for yourself. No one can rubber stamp your ideas and say "Yep, exactly the schedule for you!" because only you know what schedule will work out in the end, and how you want to balance your academic and social lives.

Further, you can research much of what you're asking yourself. I got that page comparing Math 32 and Math 32L by going to duke.edu and searching for "math 32l". You could find out just as easily on your own that Chem 151 and EGR53 both require a lab. Common sense dictates that trying to change classes later will be more difficult because the other classes have already started, may require other textbooks, and may be full at the most convenient times.

Take some initiative - it'll get you a lot further than any message board will.

Also - for EGR - you also have to take the recitation (EGR 53L, EGR 53L9 and EGR 53R are all required).
