URM humanities guy looking for safeties

Hey! I'm having some trouble looking for safeties, maybe you guys could help me out.

I am low income, first generation, multi racial (half puerto rican). My SATs will be somewhere between 1950-2200 (if I am lucky, CR is 700+, its just math that was giving me some trouble, should be in 600's though definitely) and I plan to take the ACTs for first time in February. I am ranked 14/300's, mediocre grades freshmen year but straight A's (one B) sophomore and junior year. I live in North east.

Captain of a sports team in school, volunteer activities etc.

My main focus will be humanities, like history, political philosophy, literature, etc. I am looking for somewhere that can give me a great foundation and great preparation for placement into a top graduate school (like Harvard/Yale).

I am looking for schools particularly in the North East. Cities would be nice, but its really not my focus. I am really just looking for awesome academics, passionate students, intellectualism, where learning is fun, not high school all over again..

Any ideas? :D

Your best bets may be outside the NE and since you plan grad school there, why not try the midwest, i.e., PA schools like Allegeny. OH schools like Wooster, or a great IL darkhorse like Knox. The NE safeties of yesteryear are now competitive, but since folks are so provincial, there are still great schools west of NY that still accept 3/4 applicants.

Can't really leave the north east due to family and financial circumstances. :(

Try for top LAC/Universities; they will be able to give you very nice need based scholarships.

For safety, nothing is better than your local flagship state university.

would NYU/Boston College/ Wesleyan be matches you think?

Haverford and George Washington U?

For academically good, the first three anyway, safeties: Rutgers, Pitt, Maryland, some of the SUNYs, UConn, UMass.

Any other ideas?

The biggest thing I am really looking for is somewhere that is academically and intellectually challenging, not just in the faculty, and courses, but also among the community and the students. Swarthmore, Wellesley, Amherst and other top liberal arts college I have surmised have just that. However... they aren't really safeties from what I understand..

Wellesley? I'm confused.

err, sorry, I meant Wesleyan... (I always get the two mixed up :(... not very good)

Edit: Also, what about Brandeis? Would that be a safety-match?

What do you guys think of Clark University, Hamilton, and Colgate?

I wouldn't say that Clark has the same sort of intellectual feel as Swarthmore, Brown, etc.

Hamilton might be good.
