Urm

about URMs...

I know all schools look for diversity, but as far as Vandy is concerned how important is it to them? I am not only of hispanic heritage, but hold citizenship from a South American country, though all my high school schooling was completed here (unlike the rest of it).

I do not want to make this into a "chance" me type of thread, but more or less (as I know of a few other minorities in similar situations as myself) I would love to know any insight on how much weight this would add to my application or how it is looked upon by the admissions officers. I fit the prospective student bill and have a few things (aside from my nationality/heritage) that set me apart, but aside from this what does being an URM at Vandy mean for my application?

Also, is there really that much of a lack of URMs at VU?

Thanks :)

Most elite schools would like to have more URMs on campus ... because they ARE URMs (unlike the school where I work - where there are no URMs - because we have lots of students from just about every group you can imagine). Diversity of thought and experience is an important goal for schools like Vandy, and they do try to accomplish that through their recruiting efforts. As far as what it means for your application, I can't answer that. You'll have to apply & see how it works out.

Vandy has been steadily increasing its URM population in the past few years.

Yes, there is a huge "lack" of minorities at Vanderbilt when compared to Ivies, Duke, etc...

Being a minority will improve your chances of getting in and getting a scholarship big time.
