UROP as an honors frosh?

Do any of you have experience with the UROP program as a freshman? I wonder if it is difficult to manage with the transition to college and all of the prereqs UMich requires, in addition to being in the honors program, but it sounds like something I would really like to do. Any info or opinion at all would be appreciated.

I did UROP along with honors last year. It was a great experience and never felt like too much work. Gives valuable experience in a field of your interest and allows you to make good connections. Go for it!

another quick question about urop
am i correct in assuming that if i apply to urop and get in, i’m not necessarily committed to joining the program? thanks in advance

^ I think you’re correct. I heard some people are forced to drop it anyways because they can’t find research positions.

Another question: I think I asked this before, but what’s the acceptance rate of UROP? Do most people get accepted?

After you’re accepted, there is a box to check that says “Are you accepting the invitation to UROP?” (or something similar to that). So no, you are not bound to UROP once accepted – you can decline.

Also, as far as people not finding projects, I’m almost positive that is impossible. There is just so much research here – the book you flip through to find work is GIANT! So no, that is a non-factor.

As for acceptance rates, it’s pretty damn high. It’s certainly not an “elite” group. If you apply and give solid reasons as to why you want to do research, you’re golden. Anyway, the real value of UROP is not that it is exclusive.
