I got into UROP, but I haven't decided if I want to commit to it. First off, how much work is it (in terms of both time commitment and difficulty)? Second what are all the benefits? It obviously looks good on a transcript, but to what extent does it look good?

UROP is equivalent to up to 4 credit hours and you can get pay for it. As for how much work it truly requires, it is not determined until fall, when you meet up with the prof you will be work for and then you’ll figure out a schedule that works best for the 2 of you. On average, they told us that most people do between 8 and 12 hours of research per week (or something like that). I will note that UROP requires you to attend a general seminar (I believe) every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and your attendance in it is a contributing factor towards your final grade.

Personally, I didn’t push my schedule hard because of (1) UROP and (2) the fact that this is my first semester at UMich. I ended up with 13 credit hours, not including UROP. (Keep in mind that credit hours x 2 = how much work minimum you’ll be putting in every week)

Congrats on UROP! :)

You don’t need to go through UROP to do research. You can just as easily enroll in research for credit classes like Bio 200 and/or contact faculty you are interested in working with. Some will inevitably offer you positions.
