Is the only way that parents can view their son or daughter's BAR account through that student's UserID and password? Or is there a way to have a separate parent account that can access the student's BAR account without giving parents access to email and other unnecessary parts of the UCLA account?

When I talked to my financial aid advisor, my dad asked that same question. I was led to believe that the only way for a parent to view that account is for the student to share his/her id/pw. supposedly this promotes "student responsibility". Having a separate parent account does seem kind of dumb imo, but yeah there isn't a way to do what you asked.

Nope. One and only one logon.

I have a question.. For financial aid.. Do they deduct the tuition and housing from it before they deposit it to your account through BruinDirect? Or do they deposit it and you pay for each yourself through what they give you? Thanks

i think housing is your thing to handle, but tuition comes out before it goes to bruin direct.

How much did tuition go up by this year? I just checked my BAR account and it seems a bit higher than last year...$2350 or so.

Tuition:
1. Do they send an email to students when tuition/fees are due? Or do you just keep checking and/or keep track yourself of when things are due?

When are first qtr tuition/fees due?

Housing:
1. same question

Already paid for first qtr, but when will winter qtr be due?

Sorry, but I'm basically asking how do you know what's due when?
Where are the payment schedules for a) housing b) tuition/fees c) BriunCard?

OK, for BAR, they'll send you an email on the 1st of the month when there's something due. (Although there were times when I got emails despite having a balance of $0.) You'll also see a notice on your MyUCLA as well.

Basically, just get the hang of the schedule. Tutition is always due on the 20th before the quarter starts. So Fall is due Sept 20. The instruction enhancement fees are due, I believe, the month the quarter ends, so that's due Dec 20. Also, you'll just need to pay whenever you charge something to it (like printing stuff at the libary or what not). The rule is when something is charged during a month, it's due the 20th of the following month.

Housing: you're not so lucky here. No reminders. Nothing. (Despite them trying to improve the site, I think it's worse than ever. It's fragmented all over the place with different interfaces.) You'll just need to follow the chart on the www.housing.ucla.edu site. http://map.ais.ucla.edu/portal/site/UCLA/menuitem.789d0eb6c76e7ef0d66b02ddf848344a/?vgnextoid=6d2c56da92381110VgnVCM200000ddd76180RCRD How did you pay for first quarter already? That's not due until October 1. The one(s) due over June/July are just sort of a "down payment" type thing.

There is no payment for BruinCard - that's NOT a credit card. You need to load up the money (at a terminal or BruinCard office I think) before you spend it (aka debit card).

Thanks, ucapplicant05. These are rookie questions, I know, and your answer was very helpful. Glad to hear it's not just me that's confused by the websites. Ugh.

Is this right?

Tuition of +/- $2300 each qtr (+/- $7000/yr). For fall we'll get an email 9/1 and a notice on MyUCLA. It will be due on 9/20 for fall qtr., 12/20 for winter qtr etc. What/how much are "tuition enhancement fees?" Is that in addition to the $2300/qtr?

Other BAR. If we charge something else to BAR (printing, etc), we'll get an email on the 1st, and it's due on the 20th of each month.

Housing & Meal Plan. I see from your link that it's due Oct 1, Jan 1 and April 1. We paid a bill for about $2200 the end of June. For a triple with 14P I think we're supposed to pay $9700/yr ($3200/qtr), so I guess another $1000 will get billed on Oct 1?

Sorry, I know you (and anyone else reading) aren't registrars, but have probably figured this out by now!

No problem, hiker. UCLA certainly does not match their overall image when you consider their websites (it's sloooowly getting better).

$2300 or so each quarter sounds good. IN FACT, just look at your BAR account NOW. Tuition/fees are up already. I think the notice won't pop up until the 15th or so as a reminder. You know how those notices just pop up on MyUCLA when you try to get to your study list?

The enhancement fees are $6/unit I think. It's also when they charge you the fees for your science labs and things like that. You can expect about ~$80-$150 for this kind of stuff. The extra fees for lab material and what not is listed on the registrar's site when you're looking up classes at registrar.ucla.edu/schedule.

I think so about the extra charges on BAR. I can't quite figure out their email patterns though. Sometimes I get an email when I don't owe anything. The MyUCLA notices are a bit more accurate (it'll say that you owe even if your financial aid covers everything). I suggest that you just check anyway at the top of each month for your first quarter to see what things may come up. It'll pretty much be the same for every quarter.

Housing and meal plan. What do you mean another $1000? What kind of dorm are you in (hall/plaza/suite)? It should be $2K or more. Look it up on the chart. $2,500 is due for hall. $3,000 for plaza.

Thanks ucapplicant05. This can be kind of confusing, especially if you add financial aid to the mix.

So, financial aid is distributed 9/17 and the tuition will come straight out of that right?

But, housing/meal plan is due oct. 1 and you take whatever is deposited in you account via bruindirect to pay for it yourself?

Thanks again, sorry for being repetitive but I don't want to miss any important deadlines.

Re Housing. The On-Campus Housing Rates chart shows $9702/yr ($3200 per quarter) for a Res Hall triple with 14P meal plan. At least they charge less for sardine conditions than for the suites, so that's good! We've already paid $2200, and are guessing to be billed another $1000 for fall.

I'm assuming we can pay everything online right close ot the due date with a credit card, like we did for housing so far? Frequent flyer miles.........

Drastic: You are exactly right on the financial aid stuff! The financial aid disbursements dates are NOT accurate. They're especially slow for winter quarter. BUT don't worry about it as long as you pay the maximum allowable payment (which accounts for your finaid) on BAR. Just to confirm for you: the money (grants+loans) will be directly credited to your BAR account, which means that tuition+fees are automatically deducted first. Any left over will be direct deposited into your designated bank account via BruinDirect. From there, you can spend the money as you please, including paying for housing and books/supplies.

Hiker:
Ok, the housing doesn't work like that (they don't split it equally among 3 quarters). You see, the $2200 isn't for any specific quarter. That's just to ensure that you'll commit to the contract.

You will be billed $2500 every quarter, including fall. (That's $7500 + $2200 = total of $9700.)

Like for BAR, it's actually due earlier than the 20th if it happens to land on a weekend or holiday. I don't think that's the case for housing though. In fact, housing is a bit more lenient. I think that they will NOT charge you late fees if you get it in by the 10th (according to the Ask Housing q/a). But yes, you can pay with credit card and earn those points! (ain't it cool that you can charge so much so quickly for school stuff and earn sooo much points and at the same time be paid by financial aid to cover a good portion of it?? :D Wouldn't it be nice if they would allow us to pay for tuition ourselves and get an additional 7000 points a year!)

So from what you are saying uapplicant05, I can pay off all my housing and tuition with my credit card right now, and when my fin. aid comes, it will overpay and be transfered into my bruindirect account, correct? That would be great if I could do that. Muahahaha right now hiker, frequent flyer miles =D.

Too bad! BAR won't let you overpay. As for housing, either way you still gotta pay with a credit card for the full amount.

Does BAR usually overestimate how much you actually pay post FinAid disbursement? My memory is foggy.

Just a bump for those of you don't know yet. There's a MyUCLA notice from yesterday announcing that you can setup a UCLA Logon for a third party to pay your bills. I suppose that coincides with the revamped system that allows people without UIDs to obtain a logon.

So, the stafford loan on salliemae has been disbursed today.. Does it go to the BAR account first before going into my bank account? Or does it go directly to my bank account? And approximately how many days does it take to get there? Thanks.

Do you have BruinDirect?
