My son is going to boarding school in Massachusetts and our insurance will not cover him out of state. Can anyone make recommendations on supplemental health insurance for high schoolers???
The school will usually have a local plan you can buy into for the school year. I would look at that first. If you do need to access it, the school’s health services will have a relationship with in network providers.
You will have to show evidence of insurance to enroll and your situation is common.
We had that issue and the school was not able to offer domestic students the school plan. They pointed us to various online vendors and we ended up getting a plan from ehealth. Before the quarantine, between school and sleepaway camp, he was spending so little time at home that we got a plan based in the school’s location.
^Our school’s option for students was actually better than the one our family had through work in terms of cost and coverage. Several of my colleagues have found the same to be true of their kids’ colleges. The risk pool for the insurance companies (young people healthy enormous to go away to school) is a generally good one. It’s not the plan they offer their staff, btw. But @parentofnicekid , you are so right - you can really get caught up if you need coverage out of state under a lot of plans!
