US Economic Recession: Impact on prospective/current internationals?

Well, I am back to cc as admission decisions are knocking on our doors. Anyway I thought this subject could be relevant not only to us but also future applicants.

Now, US is facing some economic troubles, no doubt, Iraq and all that. Dollar is hurt. What could be the result -- could colleges in US become slightly more affordable, or could weak dollar prompt colleges to restrict the already scanty scholarships to int'ls?

I am really interested to know what others in cc think.

The cost of education for internationals will go down because of the weak dollar.

However, since most college earn and spend primarily in dollars, I doubt forex would have an impact on scholarships given out to international students, since the scholarships are in US$.

^

as he says.
the weakened dollar is going to be a tremendous help for my family's finances.

As someone who relies on financial aid the dollar will hurt my finances. Last year when I initially applied for fin aid, my family had a yearly income of $70,000. Now when I reapply for aid it looks like my family has $90,000, when in fact nothing has changed. You cannot even argue that because of the exchange rate my family could contribute more because they are officially living below the poverty line and are contributing nothing right now. But the fin aid person at the college warned me that the weaker dollar will most likely cause my family contribution to increase...

Well, it's good for those paying in full atleast.

but a lot of int'ls depend on finaid too..

Well since colleges do not offer need blind admission to foreign students, the larger the percentage of foreign students seeking out fin. aid the better it wil be for those who don't require fin. aid.
