US News Ranking Predictions

With the 2011 US News Best Colleges rankings out in a little over a day, even though it's methodology is highly questionable...I thought it'd be interesting to hear what all of you have to think in regards to where FSU wil be placed!

Do you think we can break the top 100?

Sure:

FSU 21
Cal 22
UCLA 23
USC - On probation :D

Yay! The admins have intervened and smited the ■■■■■.

In speaking about FSU’s US NEWS Ranking, i would probably vote that we can break 100.
[Florida State University - Best Colleges - Education - US News and World Report](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/tallahassee-fl/florida-state-university-1489)

They rank us 102 last year, and with President Barron looking to the future i would say we’ll break 100.

This is the FSU page, after all… And President Barron work will pay off. Maybe not yet, but soon.

Agreed with SunnyFlorida. Definitely in 2011, we break the top 100, but I would not be surprised to see a similar ranking this year. Barron has only been president since February.

It is probably more relevant to rate FSU against other public universities. FSU rated 48th last year.

Ah! I seem to have missed the ■■■■■ comment. I have no idea why someone at a school in California is on FSU’s CC page, but anyhow…

I guess we will find out in a couple of hours! I personally believe we should be placed much lower on the list (60s-70s or better :)) when compared to national universities, and in the 20s-30s when compared to just public universities. I don’t get how schools that have over an 80% acceptance rate could possibly be higher than FSU (Just by taking a quick look at the list I see University of Iowa at 71st with an 82.3% acceptance rate, and University of Kansas with a 91.8% acceptance rate at 96 with many other high rates in between!). There are also 3 other schools tied at 102 with FSU, all with above an 80% acceptance rate as well. I know acceptance rate isn’t the only thing taken into consideration when US News makes the list, but it definitely tells a lot about the caliber of the school. Harvard didn’t have less than a 7% acceptance rate this year for nothing ;).

Parent2noles, I may be imagining this since it was a while ago, but I seem to remember you commenting on (or maybe it was someone else) in an earlier post how in the early 2000’s FSU was ranked in the 60s and then all of the sudden with a President change we got knocked down into the 100’s? Is that correct? If so, why all the hate US News?!?

There are plenty of schools with a lower predicted graduation rate which were ranked above FSU in the past. The new methodology changes should help FSU ( graduation rate now weighs 7.5 % instead of 5%)

It was probably me. I think these rankings have taken on more importance than they should.

and the verdict is…104…

Due to the budget environment, I’m sure. UF fell out of the top 50 and FSU falls to 104.

On the plus side, amongst public universities, FSU rose from 48 to 47.

One more point and we would have tied for 99TH actually. The change in methodology seemed to hurt the publics more than the privates.

There was a change in the way peer assessments were weighed. I suspect that took some glow off of some halos. Rightly so, I might add.

Sunnyflorida, you’re right, the methodology did seem to hurt more publics. A good example of that is UMiami jumping to 47 and UF dropping to 53. Also, Wake Forest now (back) in the top 25.

But as parent2noles mentioned, at least FSU is up one spot in the public rankings!

^Yes. But the rankings are still silly.

FSU is ranked under Auburn, Alabama and UF, for example. I think the concept of compartmentalizing the worth of such schools especially based significantly on the dreaded “peer assessment” incorporates too much subjective error.
