Us news rankings 2011

The new rankings are fresh off the press and the results are a mixed bag for Pomona.

First, the overall ranking is not much changed from last year. We are ranked 32nd in the west for “regional universities” and fourth in the CSU after none other than Cal Poly SLO, Long Beach, and Chico. I have not issue with the first two, but Chico? At least, we shook Fullerton off as a tie for fourth. We are 7th best public in the west.

As far as the overall engineering, we did not make the top ten in the nation for regional programs, so I’ll have to wait to see the actual printed publication.

As far as specific engineering programs, some good news. Civil engineering is 7th in the nation for regional univerisities. Electrical, we’re 10th, and mechanical we’re 8th.

Overall, we did no worse than last year, and in engineering, we did better. If they ranked architecture, I am sure we’d kick ass! Let the discussion commence!

Overall engineering made a huge jump from 16th last year to 11th in the country for Masters universities this year.

I’m sure within the next two academic years all majors in the College of Engineering will be declared impacted as the bad economy makes more kids (and their parents) interested in an engineering degree. Despite the bad economic climate, there is demand for engineering in areas such as alternative energy sources, recycling and the light industrial sector.

Agriculture has become trendy again now that the housing market is toast and utilizing land for farming seems more lucrative. Hopefully, that increases the overall profile of the university as a whole.

Liberal arts… abysmal!

lol about liberal arts

I wouldn’t knock Chico… This school is well known for the degrees listed below and likely rank higher than Pomona in all of them.

Mechanical Engineering
Mechatronic Engineering
Manufacturing Technology
Computer Science
Computer Information Systems
Electrical Engineering
Computer Engineering

^I disagree. Mechanical engineering and Electrical engineering at Cal Poly Pomona are both nationally ranked in the top ten.

The only other CSU showing up in the top 10 (to no surprise) is Cal Poly SLO.

In engineering as whole, Cal Poly Pomona is #11 in the nation for master’s universities. Chico is not even in the top 50.

Well then… please explain why Pomona falls by the waste-side compared to Chico…

Unfortunately, as good as some majors and colleges are at Cal Poly Pomona, there are others that are in very bad shape. Business seemed to be truly bad until recently. Also, bear in mind that Chico State is the second oldest university in the Cal State system, having a 50 year head-start on Cal Poly Pomona. Even with that, Cal Poly Pomona attracts more qualified students and is not stigmatized with a “party school” label --like Chico (Cal Poly Pomona has the “commuter school” label ). On the other hand, Chico State offers a more traditional college town setting that appeals to many as well. Aside from that, Cal Poly Pomona has higher entering SATs, and GPAs with 5,000 more students enrolled. The two colleges are master’s universities, but seem to attract different type of students.
