Unfortunately, the ranking criteria does include subjective reputation surveys in the absence of which Duke would rank even higher. It is interesting that schools which produce the most Nobel laureates aren't necessarily the ones doing the best research overall. The Academic Ranking of World Universities recently released an alternative ranking in which Nobel Prize and Fields Medal indicators were excluded. Duke shot up from 31st to 22nd in spite of the fact that the organization is still using outdated citation data from 2001 (which ranks Duke significantly lower than the new citation data from 2014 does). Schools like Chicago and Princeton fell by several places in the alternative ranking. Chicago from 9th to 27th and Princeton from 6th to 20th. Just goes to show that some institutions are resting on their laurels (or should I say Laureates).
