us news week accurate? hmm..

a lot of adults tell me not to decide which college i want to attend based on us news week. i am having a hard time to decide between georgia tech and university of illinois at urbana champaign, i live in the south, CHapel Hill North Carolina (where research triangle park is). so.. which one is better?

In general, UIUC for science and engineering, UNC for anything else (unless you are in NC of course, in which case I would only consider UIUC for engineering). GaTech has good engineering, but UIUC's is simply better, albeit their engineering program is much harder to get in to than the rest of the school (but not quite as extreme as Berkeley's).

UIUC is better, but there's not much of a difference. Not enough to remotely decide on that criteria. A better question is where would you rather go? The social life at UIUC is much better.

Which school do the adults you talk to say is better than the other? I ask this because I would guess that people who live closer to Georgia Tech would consider Georgia Tech to be just as good as U of I, while people who live in the midwest would consider U of I much better than Georgia Tech.

I'm obviously biased towards the claim that U of I is better than Georgia Tech overall, but this might not be true for certain majors. Plus, you might think Georgia Tech is a better fitting school for you. So you might want to visit both schools to see which one you think is a better fit. You should also see which school has a better program for what you want to study.

sorry that i forgot to mention that i'll be doing electrical engineering

Well, U of I is really strong at electrical engineering and pretty much all other engineering disciplines. Another benefit of U of I is that if you find out that engineering isn't your thing, then U of I has more non-engineering majors that are probably stronger than at Georgia Tech.

first, its US News and World Report (or just US News). Newsweek is a different publication. Second, you shouldn't be basing your entire decision on the ranking of the school in US News- or on any one factor, for that matter. You may, however, want to take it into account, as they are generally considered the most mainstream and most accurate ranking system.

I would steer away from Georgia Tech. It has a lot of drop-outs, considering the excellent students it attracts and the fact that it is inexpensive for Georgia residents. On the other hand, U of Illinois has fewer drop-outs than you would expect given their selectivity. U of Illinois and GTech are different in character, true, but compare with Carnegie Mellon which does better than Georgia Tech in graduation rate while being more expensive than GTech.
