USABO 2016-2017

That exam was easily the hardest, I am probably not advancing to semi finals

For those of you who took the test last year, how hard was it compared to this year? Also, when did you get your score back?

H

I took a L on that test.

Cutoff predictions for the v1(7th-12th) and v2(13th-17th) tests?
I took the v2 and my prediction is a 20.

Also, for those of you who are planning to study until the results come, are you planning to reread campbell or read other textbooks?

@KiaAfzali alberts, campbell, and ravens

i took v2 apparently (later week) and know i got at least 20, but idk, i made a lot of stupid errors on that test that couldve gotten me like a 28-30

how do people know that there are 2 versions??

also, i think the cutoff will be like 24 as people said 2016 was harder than 2015 but cutoff was still higher.

^^^ yea how do uk theres two versions. according to the goog doc, there seems to only be one verison???

@GeometryForLife @jmh311 There are 2 versions because when we were trying to discuss the questions in the google doc, people who took it the first week and people who took it the second week had different questions.

@GeometryForLife I’m trying to read those 3 books as well, but for the sake of time management, I’ll have to make compromises. I think I’ll read biotech, biochem, cellular respiration, and photosynthesis from Albert’s. Plant physiology and Anatomy from Raven’s. And I think I’ll reread genetics and animal physiology from Campbell. I’m probably gonna end up reading biosystematics from wikipedia, because it’s way too long in Campbell.

Also, if you got a 20 on the v2 version, there is a good chance you’ll make it. You don’t need to get a good score to go to semis, you just need to be in the top 10%. Here is a story to make you feel good. In my school, 4 people (including myself) signed up for the test. I signed up for it in early December, and read most of Campbell. The other 3 signed up for it a few weeks before the test date, and planned on studying for it over the weekend before the test. 1 of them did not even show up on the test day. 1 of them was struggling so much on the test that she decided to just turn in her test 30 min early and leave. The other one only managed to answer 15 questions before the time was up. The point of the story is that the average open exam test taker is not as try hard as the people on this forum are. Also, most of the people on this forum (including myself) think that they failed.

@KiaAfzali Are you sure that there were two versions? To me, it seems like the people who supposedly took Test 1 had not taken the test at all and were fishing for answers to the exam. Because there were other people who came on the doc later who had taken it during week one but said that they took Test 2.

Yes, there were two versions. Plus, the questions were different, so if the people got and used answers from Test 1, they would’ve been rekt.

@Dukehopeful98 thats what it looks like to me too, which is why im worried

@dukehopeful98 Idk about how the 2 versions were distributed. Different tests for different weeks is just something that I noticed. I joined the doc on the 14th and I noticed that the test that I took had different questions than the test that was already there. So I added the second test. Everyone who joined after me only worked on the second test, so I hypothesized that people who took it on the first week had test 1 and people who took it on the second week had test 2. But I could be totally wrong.

@duekehopeful98 @GeometryForLife look at the doc history. They were slowly adding questions and discussing them since day 1. If they were fishing, they wouldn’t bother discussing their “fake” questions.

for anyone who took it last year, how was this years relative to last year?

people said 2016 was harder than 2015 but the cutoff increased.

The thing I found weird is that the exam in the second week did not have a form letter, such as Exam A or Exam B. There was a spot on the scantron, since it wasn’t on the test, who will CEE know who took v1 and who took v2? Will the cutoff be the same for both of them?

Can some one point me to the link for document or add me to th Google document

how will CEE know* my bad

I was reading the 2010 forum, and everyone thought the test was easier than previous years and they predicted that the cut off would be 25-27. Some even claimed that they got at least 40 right. Turned out the cutoff was 21 and the highest score was a 35. So I don’t think that you can evaluate the difficulty of the test based on what people say.
