USC 2009 transfer thread

I am taking English 101 for the third time First two time i got a D and a W will i get rejected even if i get a A or B the third time if i get a B or an A it will wipe out my D but still have a W. Business major btw

also i got a W in Business Cal but taking it again in the spring my GPA is a 3.5 btw do these Ws hurt my chances?

I for got I also got a W in Econ 185 which is Micro but i did get a B in Macro hope these Ws dont hurt my chances

To be honest, yes all those Ws might hurt your chances. Also, your D will not be wiped out. USC does not honor academic renewal. That D will be integrated into your USC GPA if you get in, and it should be integrated into the GPA that you provide on your application.

yea i a total of 3 Ws but they had to be in Business Cal, English 101, and Micro Econ

Hey everyone, been reading a lot and soaking up information but first time poster!

i currently have about 3.4 right now in CC (about 30units) but should be raising it to 3.6ish after this fall and probably even higher after winter session. I am sad to say i really dont have many EC except for things i've done in HS.

I had a terrible HS career with like a 3.1 gpa but did score 2000 on SATs.

I founded the PC club in HS and volunteered for 2 summers at the USC medical hospital. Played piano for about 12 years and also play viola, guitar, trumpet.
Play in many basketball leagues for recreation.
Worked for my dad's company for about 2 years.

My mom is currently a psychiatrist/professor at USC and my dad's first job in the states was doing research at USC.

I still have a few months to beef up my resume, any tips? What are my chances. I really don't feel too great but really would like to have a chance.

I also have not completely settled for a major but am interested in writing and engineering. Which college should I be applying to? Which colleges give me a better chance of being accepted?

any tips/comments guys?

Is it harder to get into USC as an undecided major or a declared major?

superkev- at this point in the semester, joining a new club for EC is really not a viable option. I would suggest you get a job.

robin- There is no simple answer to that question. It depends on the major. For example, Marshall vs. Undecided, the latter is probably easier. Conversely, Undecided vs. French (or something along the lines of uncommon), your chances would be lower for undecided.

robinyun- It depends on your class standing. If you are a junior applicant there is slim-no chance that they will admit you as an Undecided major because of the University's commitment to students graduating in 4 years.

I plan on transferring as a sophomore student and I know that they will look at my HS stats which are pretty bad, but my CC stats are good about 3.8. what are my chances?

Depends on which major as well... which school within USC are you trying to get into? and what are your extra curricular activities like?

Hi guys... I'm currently a CC student in California. I want to apply to SCA for screenwriting, and I was wondering if I need to complete the core requirements in the articulation agreement? I ask because SCA transfers have to stay for a full four years after transferring, so I would assume there is plenty of time to fulfill the requirements. I plan to fulfill most of the requirements anyway, aside from two - foreign language (will probably only have one year as opposed to the recommended three) and diversity. Will it hurt me in anyway if I don't finish the core requirements for an SCA transfer?

i was trying to get into USC as undecided sophomore transfer and declare my major as soon as i got in. To be honest, i didnt have a lot of extra curricular activites in high school except a few clubs and a lot of work experience.

If your HS stats were bad, a 3.8 in your first semester of CC is not going to offset that - they will weigh your HS stats heavily. Wait until junior year.

haha hey robin, how you doing! its kevin

anyways, what grey_syntactics said isn't necessarily true. they'll only weigh your HS stats heavily if you have less than 30 units by the time you are done with spring, but in your case, you'll have more than 30 units by the end of spring semester, in which case they will ask for a spring grades request.

in my opinion and from experience, your CC GPA is the most important factor (considering you take the right courses that fulfill WRIT 140 requirement/GE requirements/and lower-division major requirements) Obviously, writing a strong essay is critical.

If you have a strong GPA/essay, I would say that not having an abundance of ECs won't be something that makes or breaks your admission.

As far as having a major declared, I think it helps to have a major declared and completing the major pre-reqs. I would personally just e-mail your USC admissions counselor for your CC which can be found on the usc website.

thanks kevin

MattG728 I'd be careful about Annenberg, its actually one of the most selective schools at USC, so if you just want to get into USC I'd apply for the College of Letter Arts & Sciences, then later transfer from inside the school.

But advice, just call and talk to the admissions people, dont call an annoying amount, but just a few times and make sure they know youre really interested and you would LOVE to go to their school, but make sure you tell them WHY you want to go there, be specific. Also, ask them what you should do to get in, they will tell you and it will show them youre on top of everything. good luck!

Woman of Troy,
This may not help the transfers, but it is informative. Keep in mind these numbers are out of date as more students applied in 2008.
For Annenberg School of Communications at SC freshman statistics 2007:
Freshman applicants: 1876
Enrolled: 157
Weighted GPA: 4.10

I got into USC last year but had a binding early decision application with Brandeis University in Boston (#31 university in the country) and have just realized that I am not made for the east coast. Does this increase or decrease my chances of getting in as a soph transfer? Would I be able to use my financial aid at Brandeis as a leverage? And can I submit my same answers and essay as last year?

Hey does anybody know if you can get in to USC if you finish your pre-req's by the summer before starting at USC?
