USC 2009 transfer thread

You would send over your transcript in the fall and USC will probably find out that way. I took a summer class as well.

i am just beginning cc but plan on applying to usc for fall 10'
would i have a better chance applying to annenberg or just the letters and science ?
and realistically what gpa is needed ?
any tipss .. ?

thanks guys :]

CLAS is easier to get into although they are both really hard to get accepted into. You can always put one or the other as your second choice major on the application so this way, in case you don't get accepted at one, they'll look at the next choice you put down. Either way, try to get a GPA of 3.7 or higher. Last year, the average transfer GPA was a 3.7 so expect the 2008 incoming class GPA to be increased to about a 3.8.

thank you !

well i am a legacy so the admissions couselor said we should aim for 3.4. So I hope I can keep that.

Oh you're lucky! My relatives went to Cornell, NYU, Ithaca...all these great schools but none went to USC. Tsk tsk. I have a 3.4 right now actually...

The role of legacy has been diminishing over the past couple of years greatly. Take a look at the freshman boards. Lots of qualified competitive kids with legacy were rejected. My advice: shoot for the highest GPA you can get. If your major/professional school is competitive, find EC's that complement and enforce your interest in your major.

linsper23- You're right about the GPA stats. 3.7 was the average GPA of accepted students in 2007. The numbers for this year's class aren't in yet. For the most part, the accepted students for this fall were at least in the 3.7 range and up, with the lower GPA's being in tough majors. (aka engineering, pre-med and the like)

I don't think shooting for a 3.4 is a very good idea, legacy or no. You guys probably haven't read this years thread but for any of the super competitive schools (Annenberg, which WOT is an expert in, Marshall, which is my major, or some of the CLAS) were basically all 3.8+ if you attended a CC, with a little bit of leniency if you attended a well-regarded 4-year. I'd say shoot for the 4.0 and make sure you complete all your schools reqs. Someone on this board unfortunately did not get into Marshall because they didn't count some of his pre-reqs. Although, he will get in for spring with good grades, it was a little bit of a hassle for him during orientation (as far as I remember). good luck to everyone and if anyone has any questions be sure to ask WOT or someone from last year, as we've JUST been through this.

I have a question about EC's. In high school I went to 4 high schools in 4 years, so I have a bunch of clubs but most of them were for only one year since the next year I was at a new school. Does that look bad? I don't think USC will know on my online application that I went to 4 schools, so they will think I just quit a bunch of clubs. I'm majoring in communication so I'm going to get my old journalism teacher to write a letter of recommendation for me to show that I was involved.

Here's my EC (Tell me what you think):

Sophomore Year:
FBLA (Future Buisness Leaders of America)
Community Service at a Community Center

Junior Year:
TV Production
Key Club
Community Service

Senior Year:
Marching Band
School Paper

Work Experience:
Anchor Blue Retail Group
Toys R Us

Is that pretty good for EC's? How many should I take in college? I don't want to take too many because I want to spend a lot of time studying. I was thinking maybe one club that I can get a letter of recommendation from and no job, so I can study.

MattG728-
They will know that you attended those 4 schools because there is room on the application where you list all the high schools, colleges and universities you have attended. Plus, a high school transcript is also required of transfer students.

As for EC's, try to keep them recent and relevant to your academic and professional pursuits. The more time that goes by the least importance they have. (Same with the high school record.) There is room for work experience on the application as well.

Try to be involved in a couple of EC's while in college or maybe do an internship. Strive for leadership positions. In terms of transferring, it really is a lot better to prove you are invested in a select few groups rather than a laundry list of clubs on the application.

Woman.Of.Troy-

So I should only put EC's back to maybe my junior year of high school? I'm hoping to attend SC as a sophomore so that means it would have only been 3 years before.

Can I skip Part I Application ? Is it possible for me just submit my everything be4 Feb deadline? cuz i want to focus on UC application during the full :P

MattG728- Since you are planning to be a sophomore transfer put in as many EC's as you can, I suposse. The emphasis will probably be on your HS record if you haven't accumulated 30 units, so it would help in your case.

gogogobears- Yes, you may skip Part I. Yes, you can also submit your application before the February 1st deadline but that doesn't mean you'll get a reponse any earlier.

The UC application is due November 31st by the way. Waaaay before USC's application.

gogogo.. the part one application is super super easy, just fyi. Takes no work at all, from what i remember.

FightOn is correct. All they ask you for in Part 1 is your basic info such as name, address, GPA, 1st/2nd choice major...it's only to get you into their computer. No essay or short essay is needed until Part 2.

Thx! all of u. it seems Part 1 is a piece of cake :)

but do u think USC will really consider my 2nd choice major? For me, i think i'll apply Marshall as my first major and hopefully try to apply Econ as an insurance. I don't know if USC will be like some of UCs that will actually ignore my 2nd choice anyway.

Where it says Fall preview essay, is that the essay?

kmzizzle- Yes, there are 3 options for the essay.

Alright, but where are the other 2 options? :O

Kmzizzle-
Here's the url to the essay options:

And just to make your life a little easier here are the three options...
Please write an essay, approximately 500-700 words (typically one page) in length on one of following topics.

The 18th century French philosopher Denis Diderot said, “Only passions, great passions can elevate the soul to great things.” Describe one of your passions and reflect on how it has contributed to your personal growth.

Thomas Edison failed many times before successfully inventing the modern electric light bulb. He said, ’If I find 10,000 ways something won’t work, I haven’t failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward.’ Reflect on an accomplishment you achieved in an unlikely way.

Newton’s First Law of Motion states that an object in motion tends to stay in motion in the same direction unless acted upon by an external force. Tell us about an external influence (a person, an event, etc.) that affected you and how it caused you to change direction.
