Assuming everything goes as planned, I'm on track to transfer to USC for the fall semester into the psychology program. Right now I am taking an American Government course and I have a good chance of earning a B. My question is this, is it worth dropping and receiving a W just to get an A in a course that isn't related to the major I'm applying for?

Basically, is it wise to drop this American Govt course or is a B not that important? Might also be useful to know I sit around a 3.7.

It is possible, and I definitely intend to try but it can’t hurt to be prepared right? My professor only grades on a small number of assignments and I bad on the first test. Just seeing what my options are.

tjacob - In my opinion, a B is an alright grade if the course is not a prequisite. But W’s don’t look to well with USC. I believe that more than 3 W’s in the transfer brochure is noted that admissions doesn’t look to kindly on that.

USC is my first choice, which is why I phrased it like that. Just trying to figure it out because at this point I’m going to go insane. I just don’t know how far a B really drops you. Trying to grasp the red tape I suppose.

also though a lot of schools will sympathize with W’s as long as there is only one or two. admissions will recognize that especially if you are an underclassman that you are figuring out your major and what kind of credits you need. as long as you have a good explanation and it’s your only W, in my opinion it really isn’t a huge deal. plus i think it’s better to have one W than to have too many classes in which you’re grades would suffer and lower your GPA.

So I guess the real question is B or W. Wish I would have phrased it better. At any rate, the grades in questions are completely salvageable and I can’t justify quitting. Thanks for the help!
