USC 2010 Transfer Thread

@grey_syntatics, I haven’t taken any other math. Stats is the required math for five of the six schools I’m applying to, so that’s what I’m planning on taking. Should I add another math course next semester?

@likeme, this is straight out of USC’s Articulation Agreements,

REMINDER TO STUDENTS IN HIGH SCHOOL: You cannot receive equivalence to USC courses for courses taken before high school graduation, but USC departments may waive prerequisites or course requirements based on these courses, on a case-by-case basis. See your USC advisor after you are admitted for further assistance. Courses must be taught on the college campus by college faculty and not used toward high school graduation to earn credit; courses taught in a high school setting, even if they are transcripted by a college or university, do not earn credit at USC.

I think this answers your question?..

ahhh nooooo. so that means i have to take a writing class?

what if i don’t even get into USC or decide not to go? I can’t take WRIT130 in the summer? I have to be admitted with a semester of writing under my belt?

likeme - sounds like it. Taking WRIT 130 over the summer is not a good idea at all if you’re thinking about admissions for Fall 2010. You’re required to have at least a semester of writing to transfer.

I think the general requirement is the equivalent of WRIT130, or one sem of writing. For Marshall you need two but I think others only require one semester.

is the CSS profile required to receive financial aid? how come USC doesn’t tell us to do this online (or does it?)

and is USC usually pretty generous in their Financial Aid packages? My household income is less than $60,000 and I have a 4.0 and will get some good recommendations from my professors. Is there anyway I can find an estimate for my FA package? I don’t know if it’s even worth paying $60 to apply if they don’t offer any FA b/c i can’t afford USC

Take a look at the 2009 thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/transfer-students/533874-usc-2009-transfer-thread.html</a></p>

I remember that some people got great packages, but you might be able to extrapolate their situations based on the info in the thread. I don’t know of any estimation tool hough.

quick question:

bio seems like the only course that transfers to USC for science. will they still count it if i take it again?

also, i took 4 years of math in hs. i don’t need to take any more math, correct? and if i do, will stats fulfill that?

ok another quick question haha.

i’m applying as a sophomore. are they expecting me to fulfill ALL the requirements? a lot of my courses here also don’t transfer to USC. i can’t possibly take my req. classes here AND take all the cores and gen eds for USC before Feb. or even before the end of the school year.

and i’m applying to annenberg for pr. i know this will tell you/me a LOT. ugh.

also, is it just me or does it seem like not very many other schools make transfers take so many reqs. the other schools im looking at don’t really care what classes you take as long as you have however many credits. and even if you don’t they’ll still consider you.

likeme - I’m positive there are more science courses that transfer over aside from biology. I’ve taken bio, chem, and currently geology which are all USC transferrable.

Taking a course again? Do you mean that you’ve taken it and are hoping for academic renewal? If that’s the case then USC will average both grades because they do not grant academic renewal (most private universities do this).

You do need at least 1 semester/quarter of math to be eligible to transfer. Also USC does not expect you to be fulfilling all the prereqs in just one year. But if you’re missing a majority of the prereqs then expect your chances to dwindle. The chances for you on receiving a SGR (Spring Grade Request) are definite because of your transfer class and prereqs.

Well what you’re looking at are other schools. This is USC and Annenberg is highly ranked and it is also a very competitive major. If you really desire on transferring to USC, try to fulfill as many as the prereqs as possible and maintain a high GPA at the same time.

MakeBank24, sorry. by “take bio again” i mean i took it in high school and am thinking of taking it again as a lab/field course.

Do you think the will take Statistics as a math course?

Which ones should i focus on filling first- Core Req. or Gen Ed. or does it not matteR?

Hiii i thought of another question…

According to my schedule plan, I won’t have 30 units by the end of my school year (Spring), but I will by the end of the Summer.

On the application will I be able to add classes that i plan to take in the Summer 2010 as “in progress”?

Thank you!

Likeme, Stats will definitely transfer to USC. It’s actually a recommended course for Communication majors.

PizzaEggroll, I’m doing the same thing. I’m mentioning that I will be taking Spanish 3 over the summer but I’m writing it in the short answers sections not on the actual class list… You might want to call USC about whether you could actually list courses on that part for summer. As I’m sure you know, since you have so few units, you will definitely get a spring grade request and they will primarily look at your high school record.

I might contact USC about whether we can put summer courses on that part of the app. I’ll let you know what I find out.

Hi i am transfering in fall 2010 but the business administration major requires 3 semester at community college, i took summer 09 am taking fall 09 will take winter 10 adn spring 10. Does that count as 2 semesters of 4 semesters?

thanks johnny_boi, that’d be great to know if i could actually add summer classes in the class list section.

however, I’m not sure if what you said about high school records is entirely true. I have emailed USC about credits and they say as long as you have 30 credits done or in progress, theyll consider mostly college grades, which I can do in a year’s time. So, yes, I won’t have many DONE but I’ll have them in progress.

Oh well that’s good. It’s cool how they are willing to accept transfers after only completing a year of work. I wish I had known about that sooner! I’ve been at a community college for 3 years now and can’t wait to get the heck out of here!

But ya, everyone on here usually has “somewhat” good knowledge about the transfer policies but nothing beats actually contacting USC to get the info straight from the source.

Does transferable GPA really out weigh overall GPA? Or do they both matter about the same?

HelloG - transferrable GPA is not the same as overall GPA. Transferrable GPA is the GPA that meets up with USC approved courses. This is the GPA that USC admissions will be looking at, along with your major transferrable GPA.

Overall GPA sums up both transferrable and non-transferrable courses. Not the same.

Hi, I’m a freshmen at brown and i am planning to transfer to usc in the fall. Can somebody please answer my questions.

Does transferring from an ivy league hinder my chances of getting in to usc?
Are extracurriculars a big factor that they look at?

bhla - I think I’ve seen you post a similar question before. transferring from an Ivy League shouldnt hinter your chances on getting into USC. It might actually assist you since you’re a freshmen currently. Meaning that if you’re transferring for sophomore standing and have less than 30 semester units. Your HS record would show reflect more for your admissions which in turn would probably help you. Given that you’re acadmics were good enough to get you into Brown.

For extracurriculars, I wouldn’t really say it is a big factor. But it does play a role in the admissions process. Obviously your performance in class with grades, job(s), and essay are the bigger factors. Extracurriculars are more to show how well rounded you are and your impact in the campus community.
