USC 2010 Transfer Thread

Hey guys…
So here is the situation…
I am a student in two CC’s, trying to get into USC…
I had a summer semester and a fall semester at Pierce College, and my winter classes at LAVC. My GPA is 3.4, only because of a D, the rest of the grades are A’s and 2 B’s. I am fluent in 4 languages, volunteered in a 3rd world country, a minority, from a country which most of the people don’t even presume exists, and of course, a couple rec-letters showing some positives in my character.
1)Of course, I am just summarizing what I wrote on my app, but I wouldn’t mind if you guys chance me on getting in this semester. I am very sure i will significantly raise my GPA, maybe around 3.7 or 3.6. 2)I do have that D though, will that be a HUGE effect on my chances?
Also, if you don’t mind, please answer these questions.
3)Do I need a transcript from a school that I am currently enrolled in? I have not COMPLETED any courses in that college yet (LAVC). 4)Also, is one transcript for all the LACCD colleges?
5) Can I hand deliver my college and high school transcripts?
6) What paperwork, besides my online application do I need to turn in (besides high school, college transcripts and rec letters)
and the last one…
7) Besides the app deadline, what is the deadline for all my other paperwork.

I apologize for all these questions, but I really need them answered… a little time left and I am beginning to panic. I numbered the questions so it would beasier for you to answer.

I am applying there for as a transfer.
i applied there last yr when i was a senior in high school.
In my new application, should i include extracurricular activities i did in high school?
Or should I assume that they still have my old application stuff.

I don’t want to be repetitive yet i dont want to miss anything in the new application.

i have over 30 units. if that affects the answer.

thank you!

@kielyy and HAFH The only forms are for High School and the college form you fill out yourself. College transcripts are not in the same boat and should not have any additional paperwork with them.

@ypark0226 First, never assume anything. If you want them to know about it, put it in your current application. But I have a question for you, did you make a selection indicating that you’d applied to USC before?

@ issac, well first of all I don’t know which major you are planning on transferring to, so that changes your chances of getting in, if you are applying to marshall the competition is so fierce that GPA weighs so heavily in your app. But if you’re applying to another major then I do not really know. But if you show consistency with an upward trend in your grades then USC will definitely see that and in the app or somewhere I believe they say they recognize this. So if you received that D early on and you kept on getting As then that really shows your character, also in the activity summary I believe you can explain to them anything about any circumstances you might of had that led you to that D and you can explain how you have redeemed yourself.

no you do not, but you need to report it in the Schools Attended section of when you are going to start and when you plan on ending there, but as soon as you HAVE completed courses there and have gotten grades, make sure you send it to USC right away, even if you get poor grades, you need to send it in or they will consider you at fault for not reporting all your grades from all educational institutions and would disqualify your application.

Yes you can hand deliver it and they will give you a reciept for everything they received and they will sign it to verify it, I did this on Tuesday and it just made me more at ease knowing everything got there, and I have the proof for it just incase anything goes wrong.

No other paperwork other than the stuff you mentioned.

They say there is no technical deadline for paperwork but they stress you should send it asap since they have so many transcripts/apps to file, just get it in ASAP and I mean asap, do not hold it off just because there is no real official deadline. I would suggest at the latest sending it in by Feb 10, but even then stretches it a little, then again there is no real deadline.

Just submitted! Good luck to everyone else getting their app in on time. I’ll still be around to help out with answering questions.

yes. I called them and told them that i applied last year too. and they gave me the same id number that i used last year.

Almost done with my essay just have to fix grammar now.

Yeah I have the same ID number as well, but on the application was there a field that asked you? The reason I ask is that when I go to the Application Home page and click the Print/Download on the bottom right, the .pdf it creates says “This applicant has not previously applied to USC,” but I can’t find a way to fix it so I was wondering if you could or noticed this as well.

@LagunaSC

no, mine does not say that. you should call them and figure out what’s going on.

do you know if a transfer student can apply to USC college of arts, letter, and science?
the brochure says only high school students can apply but it does not make sense to me…

also, do you guys know anything about USC school of policy planning and development?
it is competitive for transfers?

is their communication school competitive for transfers?

what would be a good strategy for transfers?

@yjpark0226

I called and they weren’t all that helpful, but I think I will call them again and work this out. But you know what I’m talking about with respect to the making the .pdf from the Application Home page, right? And the question just is not there for you? This is so weird.

Of course transfers can apply to arts, letters, and sciences! You must have just been looking at a document or website specific to freshmen. Unfortunately, no I don’t know anything about that!

@LagunaSC

yea thats what i am talking about. i checked and mine didn’t say that.

seems like everyone is applying to school of LAS, seems too packed and competitive : /

hey guys,
do i have to turn in the FAFSA form?

huge dilemma here…
I applied to transfer to USC for the fall of 2010…
the problem is, that i will no finish my English requirement until summer, which i included in my class activity list. Does this mean that I will be rejected? On the core requirements, its not clear whether i need to finish it before i start school at USC or before they can accept my application.
If it helps, i currently have a problem with English 102 or Speech 105
I will take 102 in spring and 105 during Summer.

@isaac - Do you mean you can only take Speech or English in the spring? Is Speech a requirement for your major, or another school? If not I would absolutely take English.

@AMorrison
no, i mean that i will not fulfill the articulation agreement for lower division writing course until summer of this year, just before fall. And it is not a major course, it is a requirement for transfer.

OK, what do you mean by this? “If it helps, i currently have a problem with English 102 or Speech 105. I will take 102 in spring and 105 during Summer.”

I believe you must take this prior to admission: “Successful transfer applicants will complete a course equivalent to USC’s lower-division requirement, WRIT 130, before being admitted.” = [Core Requirements - USC Undergraduate Admission](http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/apply/trans_core.html)

Your best bet may be to call the admissions office and see what they say.

@Issac, unfortunately, yes you have to at the very latest complete WRIT 130 by spring of this year, before being admitted. They will not begin reviewing your application officially, until you have sent in the grades for the WRIT grade, so if you had planned on taking it during summer of this year, you are too late. Many people had this concern during Marshall Transfer Workshop and the admissions counselor made it clear that you MUST complete it at the very latest by spring of this year if it is a prerequisite course.

@issac0711: What school do you go to? Seems that English 102 is your second level Writing equivalent as required by USC. Speech is not a requirement like the UC system. You will get an SGR and probably won’t know your decision until June or July.

EDIT: Just read your post. Pierce college? I’m with AMorrison on this one: What do you mean regarding the speech requirement?

And my application has been submitted. Scary stuff.
