I wish to be an engineering major, but my ACT is pretty high and my SAT is average, yet my GPA still leaves something to be desired. I've taken every higher level math and science class my high school offers, and my schedule consists primarily of AP classes. I'm fairly active in my community, holding VP positions in three different organizations, and I also work eight to sixteen hours per week. (I swear I'm not trying to brag; just give background information.) Even with a sub-par GPA, can the rest of my information balance that out?

Don't worry about it. I was in the exact same position as you last year. High ACT, average SAT, and not so high GPA. I didn't get any scholarships from USC, but I got in!

^how high was your ACT, SAT, and gpa?

Mine or hers?

I'm a guy!!!

ACT: 30
SAT: 1330 (760M, 570V)
GPA: It was 3.7-3.8 unweighted and 3.9 weighted.

I was also a club officer, student government officer, and some other things that I've forgotten.

The avg gpa for incoming freshmen was a 3.7 UW gpa. if you fall .3 below i heard its not a big deal unless your SAT/ACT isn't high. As for scholarships, thats a whole diff story since your competing with the crzy 4.0 gpas and high SAT scores.

sry I meant "his". It was just a random thing...sry sry sry. My SAT's about the same as yours, but my GPA's a tad lower, but hey, we'll just have to see. It's good to hear that at least my admission won't be TOO big of a worry, but scholarships? eh, maybe I can find money elsewhere...

you're a guy?? sorry, this whole time i've thought you were a girl too.

Do you guys know if USC counts the SAT I Writing score this year?

Is the USC Engineering program good?

Viterbi has become one of the top engineering schools in the country in recent years. The grad school is now ranked #7, and the undergrad is coming up too. Recently in my freshman engineering class we watched this [boring] video of the history of Viterbi where they highlighted that former Dean and current Provost Nikias had been focused on grad studies and that he wants whoever will be the new Dean to be focused on the undergrad part.

So if you could compare Viterbi to a school like say, Harvey Mudd out in Claremont, how would you say it measures up? Better or worse?

I think in terms of national recognition, USC would be better. Meaning, it's more likely that an engineering firm in Missouri would know what USC is rather than Harvey Mudd. Not saying that Harvey Mudd is not good, it is a very good school, but I know overall it's sort've unknown to a lot of places.

beammeup, i think you're wrong. any relatively competitent engineering firm should know of hmc. if they do not, it shows the competency of the company in keeping up with the times.

dnc, i'm tired of convicing. go to usc.

just a note, my brother went to usc for undergrad... pretty good school. engineering department is growing...among some of the best in the country. in terms of performance, i wasn't too impressed... but hey, i'm very hard to impress.

in terms of engineering, your education options are different at a college like harvey mudd vs. USC. Not (directly) saying one is better than the other but rather that they are some very different beasts and someone considering both would be well-put to investigate advantages/disadvantages of each.

Clarification: I sort've based my assumption on an article I read in some publication (US News, Time, something like that), and it did a mini-profile on HMC which said "Harvey Mudd, strong college, strange name".

I'm also sure you won't have any problems if you went to Harvey Mudd, but I'm just saying if you asked any Joe Blow outside of California if he's heard of USC or Harvey Mudd, the chances will lean towards USC more (yes, because of our football team). I'm not implying it has anything to do with our academics.

My dad went to Harvey Mudd and my brother goes to Harvey Mudd.

Harvey Mudd is awesome! my friend went to Harvey Mudd and loved it. I hear it's got a really good physics program.

divad, what year is your brother? what major is he?
