Hi all,

I have been fortunate enough to be accepted into both USC Annenberg School of Communication & Journalism (Communication major) and Northwestern School of Communication (Radio/Television/Film major).

I wanted to ask your opinion on which school would offer a better curriculum/program and internship opportunities. I have read dozens of pages regarding both schools and its majors. I understand that USC has stellar alumni network and connection since it is located in Los Angeles. However, Northwestern is more "prestigious" in terms of its reputation and ranking. I also plan to pursue a career in PR or television/film producer in the future.

And since this post is in the USC forum, please let me know possible pros and cons of the USC Annenberg Communication program!

Thanks!

Being in both the cinema school and comm school at SC, and knowing NU has a great film program (one that I got rejected by long ago, haha), the way I see it is this:

NU SoC: If you want to make/produce film/tv. Future career track leaning: production.
Comm - If you want to understand the cultural/societal effects of communication mediums such as film and tv. Future career track leaning: research.

Thank you So, I guess I will be heading to NU, after all, since my intended future career path is to become a television/film producer! Previously, I thought that USC would offer better internship opportunities and a foot-in-the-door to becoming a producer.

endlessroad, both are honestly wonderful choices and the two schools have a lot of similarities–big cities, big college sports, a Greek scene for those who are looking for that, strong alumni networks and great academics. You cannot go wrong here.

In fact, I’d look at other attributes to make the decision.

1) Cost of Attendance. Which school is the better deal, including travel costs, costs of keeping a car on campus if you will, etc.?

2) Housing.

3) Internships. USC is amazing for career-focused students, and they truly excel at providing counseling, resume-support, internship fairs, etc where the top name communications, television and film companies attend and actively recruit. If you want to work over the summer in L.A., nothing can be easier than to live in your USC apartment and commute to work over the summer. In addition, almost every day there are leaders from the entertainment industry speaking on campus and even guest teaching. You can meet and make connections with industry leaders. Cannot be overstated how helpful the L.A. location is in this regard.

4) Minors. For your particular interests, you may want to minor in Film, and USC has the best Film School in the country. Just taking Professor Casper’s intro film class alongside other top film production majors & minors is worth coming to USC.

5) Networking. See above.

6, 7, & 8) Weather. hehe.

Best of luck. Both, as I said, will be fabulous.
