USC Class of 2022

Hey you all! Congrats to all who were accepted and are being considered for scholarships  also for everyone who’d waiting till March, you’ve got this! Don’t lose hope, good luck. Yesterday I got an email from The Iovine and Young Academy that invited me to come interview on campus. The email said that all IYA finalists are considered for the Trustee, Presidential, and/or Deans scholarship, and that’d be known sometime in April.

I’ve very excited to have been invited to IYA and USC and I hope the interview process! lmk if you’re in the same shoes as me and we can chat about it!

@WWWard @CADREAMIN Do you know if students are expected to pay for their own transportation to interview?

@WWWard I recall a post somewhere that could put a deposit down for housing even before actually enrolling. It was recommended to this, even at the risk of eventually forfeiting a $55 deposit/fee, so you could lock in housing priority.

@bluepear2000 very interesting. A new wrinkle to consider in the future. congrats…

@vhsdad You can… but USC is not like other schools with just a list based on priority for freshmen. All freshmen are guaranteed USC Housing, and assignments are more often coordinated by roommates picking the same room types, buildings, etc. If you are referring to Honors housing specifically and fear there not being enough room… which I doubt - as they just built a new residential hall for such… and do not mind potentially losing the $55 application fee if your student enrolls elsewhere, go ahead and try. This link should guide you through it…

@winjammer @SCMHAALUM @pdxtigermom My son got an email a little while ago from Thornton. Definitely a different process. They likely have a certain allocation of funds and need to know who has passed auditions before finalizing awards.

Part of it reads:

We are writing to give you an update on the status of your USC application. As a first-year applicant to the Thornton School of Music, you are being considered for admission to a Thornton program, as well as for USC merit scholarships and for Thornton merit scholarships. (Carefully note that students pursuing certain Thornton majors are not eligible for Thornton merit scholarships. For more details, visit http://music.usc.edu/admission/finaid/).

All admission decisions will be finalized and you will be notified by April 1. If you are admitted to USC, you will also be notified by April 1 of any scholarship awards that you are selected to receive. For USC academic scholarships, only those who are selected to receive an award will be notified. For Thornton merit scholarships, if you will be pursuing a Thornton major that is eligible for Thornton merit scholarships, you will receive notification by April 1 as to whether or not you are being awarded a Thornton scholarship.

My portal still doesn’t have the sign up link for Explore USC…

@planner03 I believe that there is some form of travel stipend, but I do not know the details, as my daughters never went through that process.

@planner03 They give, I think, $200 for California and adjacent states and $300 for the rest of the country.

@wchatar2 Oka thanks, I’ll have to look into it, but no way could I find a flight for $300.

@planner03 I suggest Southwest. Just booked round trip from Tampa to LAX for $329. Not $300, but close

@planner03 I think its a little low as well, if there is a possibility that they are going to give my S $200k I think they could shell out another couple hundred bucks. Not complaining USC admissions if you are monitoring this thread, not complaining one bit:)

approx how many dean’s scholarships are given in march?? usc is definitely still a choice for me if i am accepted and receive no scholarship, but would be nice to know if dean’s in march is still a reasonable possibility

@wchatar2 Thank you for that very kind post in the other thread. I try to share what I have seen having several attend in the last 6 years. Been there, done that as it goes. The one thing you come to know at USC is how it truly is a family that follows you long after USC is over and no matter where you are in the world. My son was recently in NYC during football season and apparently there is a “USC bar” owned by alum that always play the USC football games and alum consolidate! Whenever we travel we are always given the fight on sign if we have anything identifying us as USC anything. It’s really fun. And the value of the alumni network is no joke - they are there for future grads.

It is also a school where it is very cool to be whoever and whatever you want to be. A judgement free zone where kids can blossom into their true selves.

And I want to note, that while this recent process is a bit bumpy, the online systems at USC are second to none when it comes to your student and you managing their life at USC. Whether registration, payments, or looking for info, it is all there, very efficient and well organized.

I think the airfare is what it is, if they paid it all, people that weren’t that interested may come just for the free ride. So I suppose they want to see some commitment on the student’s end, but I get it is hard for some folks.

Portals will continue to update when things are available to sign up. I think housing is a ways off.

For housing, yes, put down the application fee when it opens to get your place in line (this is for everyone) but housing isn’t a big deal at all for Pres and Trustee folks, there is space for them in the fabulous USC Village. There is also guaranteed housing for freshman and they do a great job matching room mates if you don’t have one. I don’t think I have ever heard a complaint re freshman housing, doesn’t seem to be issues there. Everyone wants something different so kids usually get what they want as freshman. My D could have been in the Village, but chose Birkrant with no AC, a factor which was super important to her brother before her, but not to her. She looooves it there. I hope if you haven’t been, and it is a serious contender for your child, that you are able to see how beautiful the campus is. That moment, when you are standing on any campus with your student, and you realize it is the perfect home for them, is a great feeling.

@traveler2000 There are 250 Deans and how they are divided between Jan and March is unknown. I didn’t see many posters on here implying they got a Dean’s but it is a small sample. But maybe there will be more than usual this March, no way to tell.

Has anyone gotten a Dean’s?

didn’t get merit here in ny. so sad, if i don’t get a dean’s in april, usc is probably out of the running for me. my family has a high efc, but my parents aren’t willing to pay full price for usc

So, 0-2 with my sons. Bummer. We will see if the plus up the NMF aid offer. I have my doubts they will, but you never know until the Financial Aid Letter is presented.

Accepted w merit consideration for presidential

So it a student is interviewing for one of the merit scholarships, does that mean he/she is automatically eligible for honors housing?

@vhsdad Yes, I think I read that in the housing book in The White Box.
