USC Class of 2022

Didn’t get consideration for USC scholarships, but did just receive an acceptance letter from UNC-CH with scholarship money. Ironically, a girl from my school who just found out she was a finalist for the USC Presidental scholarship was subsequently denied from UNC. Looks like USC is out of the running. Congrats to all who received merit money!

@vhsdad The McCarthy Honors College in USC Village is for freshmen students with Mork, Stamps, Trustee and Presidential scholarship. (Not Dean scholarship) My daughter is a freshmen living in McCarthy. She applied housing in February (before she committed) and paid $55 housing deposit. She filled out a “profile”. She started talking to a few girls as they are looking for roommates/suitemates. And in April, they all committed and set for roommates/suitemates. Congratulations!

are we supposed to get an email saying that we are no longer being considered for scholarships if we did not receive anything?

@pensandnotebooks You should have gotten an email saying you weren’t being considered for the Presidental and other full and half-tuition scholarships. However, it still does say you can be considered for other scholarships at USC and also that you’re still being considered for general admissions. Just that you’re not getting full or half tuition paid for, unless of course you get in as an NMF and rank USC first.

Just curious, did anyone get one of USC’s top awards with an ACT below 33? I’m really thinking these were test heavy in their consideration.

@bigchoices2018, you can register for Explore USC on the portal now.

If I applied to Thornton as a Music Industry Major, is it weird that I have not gotten any info about merit scholarships? I have no audition requirements and I know some people in pst years got notified that they are considered for a scholarship but then also told that they haven’t fully been admitted to Thornton yet. I just find it odd if they wait to tell you because there are two totally different applications that each school sees

I haven’t gotten any sort of email. Are the emails and portal updates still coming out?

Has anyone been admitted that took dual enrollment classes their senior year?

@gameset are you sure that there are no Dean’s in the McCarthy Honors college? I believe I know 2 girls that live in the honors dorm that were Dean’s recipients.

Room opened in in McCarthy over the summer, even non-scholarship kids had a window of opportunity to pick it. So sure, some Dean’s kids may have been in too. But in the initial placement it was just for Pres and Trustee, etc. students.

@pastpower Yes there are lower than 33 test scores in there as well. There are so many factors besides scores, there is grades, also major, college within USC, essays, passion, ECs, and demographics of all kinds - geography, race, urm, first to college, etc., that play a role. Lots of measures so one can certainly “compensate” for another that others may see as lower than someone else.

@planner03 we did it last year. They do reimburse you up to $200. Last year you could either book through USC or take receipts and submit the appropriate forms and all receipts and they send a check. We are from the east coast. We have been consistently able to find direct flights to and from USC from as low as $215 RT and the highest we paid was $325 RT. I use kayak.com to book most if that helps at all. They do a data predictor based on past prices which will give you a buy or wait indicator as well which I have found to be very useful!

Ya it was always max’d at $200 in previous years, would be interested if that changed to $300. If someone can confirm, thanks!

@pinkcactus from USC’s website: “Undergraduates pursuing degrees in Music Industry, Popular Music Performance, Music Production and Choral Music are not eligible for Thornton scholarship awards.”
My son is applying for popular music and got an email saying he was not up for merit scholarships and he would hear by April 1st…

@Pastpower It is definitely not all about tests. I have a 1510 on the SAT and got nothing

When I registered, it said students from CA, Arizona, and Nevada get $60 and all other states get $200.

@astute12 so your son heard back today about USC merit scholarships even though he applied to Thornton? I haven’t heard anything back at all and I have spoken to both Thornton School and General Admission about not having found out and they both told me to call the other about it, just super confused and am so anxious to know

@LvMykids My daughter knows 1 girl (RHP with Dean scholarship) live in the McCarthy, and I think she and her roommate shares the suite with RA. I don’t know much about the RHP

@pinkcactus yes he received an email from USC. Have you checked your portal? All the top academic merit scholarships went up on the portal last night. Try calling Thornton again, but from what I read online they don’t give merit scholarships for music production. I could be wrong though. Thornton is still holding auditions this weekend, so they probably won’t make decisions until next week.
