Hey guys,
I just got accepted to USC :) n I was just wondering if you guys could give me some more detail about it's economics program. How strong is the program? How hard are the classes? What is its reputation?

Thanks!

Bumpppppppppp

I’m a current Econ student at SC; I feel as though USC’s econ dept is overshined by Marshall, and reputation wise - it’s not the best econ program in the nation, but you will come out of it with a solid degree.

There are some great professors here - and some total duds (but you have that with every department).

The difficulty of the classes vary. Be sure to have a good math background before opting to take the upper division econ classes (it helps to have already completed calculus, stats, and lin al before starting econometrics). So, if you’re not a math person - I really wouldn’t recommend economics.

Let me know if you have any more questions!

How feasible is it to transfer from econ to Marshall? I was just admitted to USC and will be a freshman in the fall.

@compoopers - It is not as easy as simply signing a form as you have to compete against other students to get in but it is possible, especially if you keep a high gpa your first semester or two.

OK, I will try my best to keep up a GPA and I’ll figure out the forms. Good to know it’s possible.

Just wondering would it put me at a disadvantage? Like I wouldn’t have to graduate in 5 years, would I…? I was hoping the first year stuff might have a lot of overlap.

No. As a freshman there are lots of general ed courses you have to take (6 categories, 1 class from each) as well as math, english, etc.

You can knock all that out your first semester or two as well as the micro/macro econ classes which are required for econ as well as business/accounting majors. That is generally what people will do in order to set themselves up for switching to business or accounting. Just go talk to your advisor when registering for classes and let them know what you want to do and they’ll help you plan a schedule.

Perfect. I will do that as soon as I am able to, thank you so much.

I’m also accepted into econ at USC. Do you know how it compares to econ at BC?

No clue how it compares to USC. I don’t think BC is known as having a top program either though so I’d probably end up deciding on cost to attend, which campus I liked more, and if you want to be on west coast vs. east coast. Maybe try asking in the BC forum to get their opinion on it.

How easy is it to transfer from for side to Marshall?
