lreds: seems like we're doing the same thing. i applied for freshman admission last year, and now im attempting to reapply. i'm also at a ccc and started the summer term. i know that if you have a prereq still remaining (aka you're taking it 2nd semester) then you can send them a grade card report and you'll have to send them a transcript after everything is completed. i've heard of situations where people have been admitted while still taking a prereq in their last semester.

so guys, how much of a disadvantage am I in if I only have one year of experience in foreign language? Ive only taken one year of Spanish in high school and will be enrolled in Spanish 1 by the time I send in my app. (I plan on finishing the 3rd semester this summer)

fight_on1: ha nice man. that's good to hear about the finishing up prereq's thing. what major are you trying for? i'm doing English w/ a Pre-Law emphasis. it's probably easier to apply to USC for fall '09 for us actually since that allows them to focus solely on our college grades rather than a combination of those and HS stats/SAT's. Oh well, it's worth it to try I think. Besides, there's always the chance that we'll be given spring '09 admission.

lreds: im a business major, and for my second choice i chose economics.

southbaygirl, you will have a pretty tough time getting into Marshall. Average admit GPA for USC is 3.57 (and that's on the literature USC hands out here:

(look at page 3 of the brochure)
--not from some admissions counselor at a CCC as some on here claim). It is not 3.7 as Doryx claims;--I'd like to see his/her data . (Silly me, but I'm presuming here that USC would not send out false literature, nor highlight false literature on their own website.)

And USC's Marshall school states right on their own website for undergraduate transfers:

that preference is given to those with 3.6 GPAs and above--implying that much below that and you have little to no chance--but also implying that you don't need much more than that to have a real good chance.

However, with a 3.27 GPA--sorry to say--you really will have quite an uphill battle. And they aren't shy about turning people down at USC--their transfer admit rate has been right around 26.6% lately.

Calcruzer: the avg. GPA this year was substantially higher than 3.57. I have the brochure from 06-07; it has the same photos, design, text, and (you guessed it) avg. GPA. It's much easier for them to only change the essentials (like due dates), and I doubt they've even computed an official avg. yet.

I was told by two different admissions staff that the avg. for this past year was between 3.7 and 3.8. And given the fact that I got spring admit w/ a 3.7 GPA, I believe it.

Plus, during the admissions process, we were sent a letter saying that USC was planning on taking less than the previous year (~27%), and wanted to let us know.

So yeah, bottom line: it's always worth it to apply, but it seems like things are getting moreso competitive.

Transferable GPA: 4.0
Non-Transferable GPA: 4.0
Units: 27 transferable
GE: Still working on. I am taking 21 credits this semester.
Pre-Req: Will be finished by this semester.
EC: Associated Student Body (ASB) - current senator, AGS, Started Business Student Association (this semester)
Work Experience: Various marketing and Event management gigs (soley as contract work). Experience leading teams of < 20.
Applying to: Marshall
2nd major: Public Policy, Pre-Law
Current school: Mission College (Santa Clara)

I am applying to USC as my safety school, although I absolutely loved it when I visited. Is there any chance I don't get accepted if I keep my GPA above 3.85? I'm also applying to Stanford, UCB (Haas), UCLA, and conceivably the University of Pennsylvania (Wharton) if I score high enough on my SATs next month. My target score is 2250.

I would be interested in hearing what other schools you guys are all applying to.

You can really believe whatever you want. I've gone through the entire application experienced, talked to people who applied, talked to CC counselors, and USC counselors. The consensus GPA to be competitive is around 3.7GPA. I especially think it's accurate because lot of transfers in this very thread last year got spring admission in non-impacted majors with 3.8GPA. I got in as a spring admit with a 3.76GPA... why didn't get regular admission even though I'm above the average GPA. Everyone's experiences varies.

I'm not saying the 3.57GPA stated in the brochure is a lie. I just think there is something that is skewing the data. Maybe sport transfers, non-impacted majors (ie. Africa studies), or who knows what.

Like I said before, you can believe whoever you want, whatever that is written.. I'm just giving you my insight after spending hundreds of hours browsing through threads, talking to several counselors, and admits.

@fight_on1: how did you obtain a new USC ID?

Congrats to all the new Trojans! My biggest academic regret was not matriculating to USC Marshall when I was accepted. I often wonder how different my life would have been if I had followed my gut instinct and fulfilled my goal to go to SC instead of listening to everyone tell me to go to a different school because THEY perceived that school as "better".

Look, the admissions get tougher every year as the class size increases--so the percentages change. But unless I see it in the Common Data Set--I'm a sceptic. Admission counselors at colleges are always inflating their numbers relative to what the Common Data Set reports for the GPA/SAT/ECs of their students. It's in their best interests to do so, since it makes their colleges appear more exclusive and selective than they really are. For example, Michigan admins have claimed for the last 4 years that their average GPA is increasing significantly, yet it was no higher last year than it was 5 years ago. I see in the Detroit Free Press article highlighted here in CC, they are claiming that the average is up from 3.62 to over 3.7 in one year and will go to 3.8 next year (I'll believe it when I see it--and I definitely don't believe it now).

Since I work in the audit field, (I've done SOX audits for Boeing, Symantec, Mercury Interactive, Brocade, Excelligence, Xilinx, Seagate Technology, and Aviza Technology), I've been personally involved in prosecuting six different cases where over $1 million in fraud was involved because people like to "stretch" the truth. It makes me less trusting of personal statements, and much more reliant on data that will be audited to match up with federal requirements (FAFSA financial loans are based upon college's submitted CDS--and there are major penalties for submitting invalid data)

So, excuse me if I stick with the overall statistics as reported to the government in an audited report, rather than individuals' offhand personal statements. And excuse me if I also believe that you should be more sceptically of individual's statements as well--or in putting too much reliance on one or even a few individual results.

How many transfers applied at USC last year--about 3,454? With 944 accepted? It's not that I don't believe you are trying to sincerely give good information. It's just that I don't think your results and that of the people you talked to is statistically significant--especially since you are not a random sample.

P.S. Congratulations on your acceptance--and good luck at USC.

944 out of 3454?? you gotta be kidding me!

Calcruzer: Do you have a link to the CDS? College Board has different numbers on their site (much higher, though ratio is about the same). While they are not always the most up to date, it seems difficult to believe only around 3,500 some students applied, much less that the yield was smaller than 1,000 students.

hahahahaha jesus, lurking around these forums is doing wonders for my anxiety.

btw, do you guys know if you can get admitted into a major as a junior transfer and then try to switch majors as an internal applicant once at usc?

I went to Marshall Transfer day yesterday. It was an eye opener. I went to the campus Transfer Day and i thought oh yeah i got this in the bag. In mine I had an admission asst director look at my transcripts and she FLIPPED OUT when she saw I had a W in my econ class that is required to transfer into Marshall school. After she saw that she didn't want to see anything else on my transcript.

Along with I have a 3.61 currently of transferable courses, currently and I have 1 semester left to this one and she said that the average GPA of that 3.6 transferable is a collective GPA not the transferable GPA.

I learned a lot but going to it but all i saw in her face was denied denied denied. I am still going to apply and work twice as hard and write an essay that will knock her right out. I want to believe that they will not just ignore someones transcript because of one red flag.

BTW when I tired to tell her about my life and why i had a W in that class she basically was telling me in other words, why would we take you if there are tons of perfect applicants to choose from? We are a selective university and you have to really show us a reason to choose you over a person with a perfect application. Now, I do know that USC is a selective and competitive college especially since 25% of the applicants are wanting to go into the business school. But it is not Berkeley or Stanford. Walk around the campus I see people similar to myself and even some that have an appearance that I wonder why or how they got in. I know they do not only accept the best of the best. So why did I have a feeling that they were?

Well, I don't think she was justified in "flipping out," (maybe just a bad day?) but if the course is a requirement for transfers, then it makes sense for them not to admit someone who hasn't completed it, or is in the process.

I already retook the class over 2 semester ago. I dropped out after my first semester and it was just too classes, so it did not even matter what class it was. I retook both classes and got B and an A of those classes I dropped.

Is it hard to switch majors, say from philosophy to psych or econ?

jeus this many people are applying transfer to USC? you all have 3.7+gpas also, you make me doubt my chances. I was told my an admissions officer that the average gpa for a transfer is 3.5 at USC...

cheba- i heard it's really easy to change major @USC.!
