I posted this in the financial aid forum without much success. Perhaps you parents can help me out. On my SIG account I just got a notice to complete and mail in a form called "Ability to Benefit Verification". Does anybody know where I can get this form and what it is for?

A student must have a high school diploma or a recognized equivalent (GED, certificate of equivalency, etc.) or must pass an Ability to Benefit test (with a certain score) in order to receive any Federal aid.

Colleges have their own form--you are asked to certify that you have a high school diploma (or whatever) and attach the paperwork. I googled "ability to benefit verification" to find out this info. You might want to do that also.

I did a quick look on the USC website and couldn't find any Ability to Benefit form. You will need to email the financial aid office to get this sorted out.

Are you international or have you been out of school for some time? Do you not have a high school diploma or a GED? This may be reasons why you may be required to fill out this form.

Thanks for your help ellemenope. I tried to google it earlier and came up with similar results as yours. I am not an international student and I graduated high school in New York in 2004 (top 10% and everything with a Regent's diploma). It is weird that it would not be recognized.

I also looked on the USC site and could not find the right form; which is strange as most necessary forms are available to print. I will definitely call them Tuesday to get this all sorted out (which I planned to do anyway), but since it was the weeked I decided to ask the cc forum about it to get a heads up.

From what I have found, it looks like a form that needs to be completed for funds to be disbursed into my student account. Hopefully this means that I am accepted, as I haven't recieved an admission decision yet (I am a transfer student).

Anyway, thanks for the advice...I will keep my fingers crossed...

Any USC parents have to fill out this form for financial aid?

If you had googled it earlier, then why did you ask what the form was for? You could have just told us!

You needed to submit proof of high school graduation (official transcript from your high school, which is required as part of the transfer application, should have done it) as part of the transfer package. Perhaps USC doesn't have a copy of this document and thus assumes that you didn't graduate from high school (and thus requires the Ability to Benefit Verification).

I asked because it seemed like a very random financial aid form to ask for. A high school transcript was required for the application process and was received from my high school a few months back when I first applied to USC. I just asked in case their was another type of form out there that anyone knew of. Either way I will contact them Tuesday morning and get it all sorted out.
