You may have the opportunity to conduct research on artificial intelligence capabilities. If you are especially creative you may have the opportunity to create new computer simulation systems, design video games, program languages, manage high speed networks and integrate 3D animation into motion pictures.

The department offers research in computer networks, software engineering , human computer interaction, brain simulation, computer graphics and animation. Recent projects which had student participation in researach include the Facial Recognition System, Video Streaming Technology and the Graphics and Animation of a Humanoid Simulation.

Viterbi also offers support in student chapters of IEEE and the Assoc. of Computing Machinery. In addition, Viterbi has the academic resource center, overseas and exchange programs. Also, there is the Klein IUEL.

At Viterbi your peers will be from around the world, which should enhance your experience at SC. Women comprise 27% of the undergraduate engineering students.

Recently DOE has designated SC as the site of an Energy Frontier Research Center with a $12.5 million grant. There may be interesting research opportunities for computer science students as the center develops.

The Computer Science department has a new chair, Dr. Shan-Hua Teng. Dr. Teng, a theoretical computer scientist, is eminent in his field. His resume is long and distinguished. He has been honored by a NSF Career Award, Sloan Fellowship, IBM Award and the 2008 Godel Prize.

Perhaps one of these research projects listed above may be of interest to you.

Another aspect of the school are prominent alumni in the field who lecture and mentor students. Viterbi also offers an Annual Career Conference and an Engineering Career Fair.
