How difficult is the USC French Placement Exam? I was thinking of taking the test in person to test out of the foreign language requirement.

Also, would it be possible to take the foreign language placement exam after orientation?

Last year, my son took the foreign language placement exam on-line. I think (not 100% sure) if you take the exam after orientation, you have to take it in person at USC (not on-line). Again, I don’t know this for a fact, but unless you are a native French speaker or someone completely fluent in French, do not expect to completely test out of the foreign language requirement.

My daughter took the placement test online. She is not a native speaker nor was she in AP. She tested into French 3 and has an A.

It depends on your high school French teacher.

You can take the placement test online to test out of the first two semesters of a language. Then, when you get to campus, you take an in-person placement exam to test out of the third semester. If you start taking the third semester of your language and find that it isn’t challenging enough, you can take the placement exam to test out of it even after the semester has started. The language placement office will fill you in on more specifics of the test and what to expect.

How does AP credit help you out on your foreign language requirement?

I’m in AP French right now and I’ve taken French for the past 7 years, the thought of having to take French again in college doesn’t really bode well for me. I’m pretty confident I can get a 4 or a 5 on the exam, will that count as a foreign language credit?

Anyone know how hard the Spanish placement test is?

I have the same question as qzar, with Spanish. I thought it would count but maybe not …:/

This should answer your questions:

[USC ARR : Articulation : AP Exam Credit at USC](http://www.usc.edu/dept/ARR/articulation/apexamcredit.html)

The placement exam isn’t very hard. It was pretty short, but brush up on some of the irregular subjunctives and when to use them. That was the only tricky part.

I’m not sure exactly how it’s scored, but I got a 760, which placed me into the third semester. If you’re comfortable with AP-level material, you should definitely take the online test and see how you do. It’s way easier than the AP test.
