If anyone wanted to know, the acceptances for FSH are now out! I just got my FSH acceptance through email at 11 pm on Thurs, 4/16!
:) Yay!

Whoo! Me too!

Congratulations!! You guys must be pretty excited! Great Job :)

I did too! I was wondering how difficult it is to get admitted to the FSH program. Does anyone know? I honestly don’t know much about the program at all.

Best wishes, congratulations!

congrats!! were we supposed to apply for it? or do they consider us for it based off of our application?

You were supposed to apply.

longnguyen- Did you write an essay?

I requested an application, but was turned down because I was a physics major, so I wouldn’t know anything about it, sorry. But I would assume an essay or several short statements.

longnguyen: Did you get a rejection letter?

Not a rejection per se, but I received an email saying I was not eligible to apply for FSH.

Why on earth are physics majors not eligible?

I have absolutely no clue, as physics involves at least one or two chem classes. My friends said physics majors should be, but there you have it:

Thank you for your interest in participating in the Freshman Science Honors program. The program is open only to students majoring in Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Neurobiology and Chemistry. As a physics major, you are not eligible for the program.

We wish you the best of luck as you choose which university to attend and hope that it will be the University of Southern California.

Upon further reflection, it appears they only want students whose majors require all 4 classes that FSH offers (2 bio, 2 chem) and physics majors only require 1 or 2 of them - I guess they don’t want people just taking the first semester and not continuing en masse.

Still, I think it’s ridiculous.

I’d probably catch hell for suggesting this, but it’s easy to change your major to biophysics, just to get into FSH. Then once you’re done, change back to ordinary physics.

Would I be able to select the FSH that I want to take first, say, perhaps a class that is needed in a physics major?

Hypothetically.

it was my understanding that FSH is a four course block over two semesters - bio 1 and chem 1 in the fall, bio 1 and chem 2 in the spring.

If you just want to take one of them, say chem honors, I’d contact the chem department and ask if you can take it outside of FSH. Dunno on whether that would work.

I think they are for premed, maybe?
