USC full ride vs. Northwestern HPME

Hi,

I just got the Mork Family Scholarship at USC (full tuition + stipend) and I also got accepted to Northwestern's HPME (combined 7 year medical program). I'm trying to decide which option to pick, and I'm not 100% sure about being a doctor. Also, my family is middle class, so the money is not life or death, although it is still something to consider. I also recently became interested in healthcare investment banking/consulting. I'm majoring in biomedical engineering and working with a biomedical startup in LA might be cool for a bit, but I could also do that at Northwestern by doing an internship or deferring my matriculation to med school by a few years. If I went to NU, I would also do the MD/MBA program so my options are open and undergrad is relatively relaxed. What is the best option for me? All I know that I want so far is to work in healthcare consulting for a little bit, and either go into medicine (surgery) or do healthcare investment/private equity and be on the edge of innovation. Maybe I could do both. However, if I did pre-med at USC, it would be much more difficult and I may not be able to fully explore what it is I like. Any advice welcome.

Why pay for four years of undergrad when you don’t have to? Both are execellent schools

If you are sure about medical school take HPME if your family can afford it.

All other options lead to USC. There is absolutely no reason to give up so much money and go to a program with a sole goal of being a doctor when you are not certain about being one.

At the very least you can do pre-med at USC and then transfer to Northwestern

It would be best to not go to medical school with loans so USC would be a better choice.

If I were you, I’d pick USC. A free quality education at USC outweighs potential debt at Northwestern. Like someone mentioned above, they’re both great schools so don’t worry about that. If you’re still interested in NW, definitely go there for grad school.
